It’s the first full week of November, which means one thing – Election Day. Polls will be open Tuesday 6:30 to 7:30 as citizens pick representatives for town boards and school board at-large. Davidson Community Players is organizing a production of the Tony Award-winning “Children of a Lesser God” and they’re looking for deaf or hearing impaired actors and production help. An interest meeting is planned Monday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., at Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour St. Meanwhile, the players’ Connie Company continues its performances  of “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Davidson Community Players’ Connie Company youth program will present “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” Nov. 5-13 at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. Based on the Emmy Award-winning, Saturday morning educational cartoon series that aired in the 1970s and 1980s, “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” is now the basis for one of the most fun, energetic, and toe-tapping musicals ever to hit the stage!

For young people in the 1970s and 80s who had a hard time remembering the difference between adjectives and adverbs, what a conjunction was and how to use it, or how legislative bill navigates the US Congress, they may just have Schoolhouse Rock to thank for their lessons. The pop culture phenomenon is now experiencing a new life on the stage in “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” for a whole new generation. Read the full story

It’s the first week of November, and as the mercury begins its autumn slide toward winter weather, events in and around Davidson head indoors. Ballet Hispanico, the nation’s preeminent Hispanic-American dance group, performs Wednesday, while the Grammy-nominated Plain White T’s are on stage Friday, both at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. Hough High School’s theater department will perform “Our Town”, the Thornton Wilder classic, on Thursday through Saturday nights; and the Connie Company — the Davidson Community Players’ youth program — will open its eight-show run of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” with two shows daily on Saturday and Sunday. Davidson College Theatre Department kicked off its 2011-2012 Mainstage Series this weekend with a rendition of “Romeo and Juliet.” A cast of 13 students, freshmen and seniors alike, ranging from biology to German majors, performed William Shakespeare’s famous work with intense energy, passion, and their own unique twist on a classic play.
