It’s typically taboo to pulling out your smartphone in a theater. But a new play written and produced by Davidson College student thespians will encourage the audience to do just that. “Spark Source” was created with funding from the Davidson Research Initiative and runs this weekend at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, exploring the social implications of technology and social media.

Performances are Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7:30pm and at 2pm Sunday, Sept. 29. Tickets are $10 for regular admission and $5 for students, and they are available only online at

Enjoy lectures, related events, and other activities as we begin our first weekend of Fall. Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius hosts its annual BBQ, Bake Sale, and Silent Auction all day Thursday, with barbecue for drive through, eat in, or carry out.  Thursday night at Davidson College, Pulitzer prize-winning photographer José Galvez will talk about his work documenting the experience of Latinos in the US at 7pm in Davidson College’s Belk Visual Arts Center.

The arts scene north of Charlotte is booming these days. I envision a time –  soon – when residents of Cornelius and Davidson won’t have to venture into the city at all unless we just want to see tall buildings, or encounter traffic.

Among those impacting the arts scene locally, and in a big way, is The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.  Drama at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center is always a treat, and invariably thought provoking. Opening the 2013-14 season, “The Tale of The Allergist’s Wife” upholds The Warehouse’s reputation. It takes a talented brand of actor to deliver a timely barrage of enticing, at times even wicked lines of entertaining of adult comedy. This Weekend’s calendar is full, and just in time for the last weekend before students return to school. The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife opens tonight (Thursday) at the Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius at 8pm. It will run Thursday through Friday for the next few weeks, with two Sunday matinee shows. Billy Jones and The Pocket perform at Summit Coffee starting at 8pm, rain or shine. Broadway playwright Ken Ludwig and the Davidson Community Players have another hit playing on the Davidson College stage. “Leading Ladies,” which Thursday at Duke Family Performance Hall, is one of Ludwig’s most hilarious comedies.

A troupe of eight talented DCP actors keep the audience screaming with laughter for more than two hours delivering Ludwig’s lively comedy, abundant with improbable characters, wacky situations and a smattering of suggestive humor. Read the full story
