Our weekend calendar in and around Davidson offers a wide variety of choices. A reception tonight opens a new exhibit of sculpture by Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz at Davidson College’s Visual Arts Center. Also, Denzel Washington’s new film “Book of Eli” opens Friday at Our Town Cinema’s. It’s described as “a post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.”

On Thursday night, Lake Norman Transportation Commission, which includes public officials from Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville, holds its monthly meeting at Davidson Town Hall. It’s a busy week ahead in and around Davidson with public meetings, theater, an art exhibit opening and school open houses. Davidson College’s women’s basketball team looks to keep its winning streak alive tonight against Chattanooga at Belk Arena. The Town Board meets Tuesday night, then spends Wednesday to Friday at a 3-day retreat in Charlotte. Also Tuesday night, philanthropist Doris Buffett (sister of investor Warren Buffett) lectures at Davidson College.

Our Davidson Weekend Calendar is a busy one this week, with meetings, music, the start of the Davidson Farmers Market’s winter tailgate markets, and the Rocky River Road Club’s annual fund-raising Polar Bear winter bike ride. Davidson College men’s basketball team is at home again Saturday afternoon, hosting league rival Appalachian State. And there’s plenty of music, starting tonight with the Rusty Knox Band at Summit Thursday. Summit also will feature a rare jazz night when Davidson guitarist Dennis Currier and his trio Terzetto play a CD release party Saturday. The college is slowly coming back to life, as students will arrive at the weekend for classes that resume Monday. And Davidson Farmers Market starts its winter tailgate markets Saturday morning, continuing every other week.

The town’s new Natural Assets and Tree Advisory Board holds its first meeting tonight at Town Hall. And Davidson Community Players opens a re-staging of its fall show “Almost, Maine” at Spirit Square in Charlotte Friday. Details below under “theater.” Read the full story

CHARLOTTE – The Arts & Science Council (ASC) said Wednesday it will release the remainder of its FY10 operating grant to the Charlotte Symphony. The release of the remainder of the grant, totaling $375,000, was contingent upon the Symphony meeting its bridge funding goal of $1.77 million for FY10.
