Performances by a group of Ugandan dancers and the Davidson Community Players, a fundraising breakfast and auction and the next installment of the Cornelius Concert Series highlight this week’s activities across the area. The group Spirit of Uganda — 22 young Ugandan dancers and drummers — will perform Tuesday night at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall as part of the college’s Smith Artist Series.

The Davidson Community Players continues its run of “Children of a Lesser God” at the Armour Street Theatre, with shows Thursday through Saturday night and a Sunday afternoon matinee. Read the full story

Rusty Knox

Davidson-based musician Rusty Knox will be among the nominees vying for Singer-Songwriter of the Year honors at the 2012 Charlotte Music Awards/Songwriter Showcase on Saturday night, Feb 25, at NC Music Factory in Charlotte. In addition, The Rusty Knox Band also has been nominated for the region’s Americana/Bluegrass Band of the Year. They’ll perform April 12 at Puckett’s Farm Equipment in Charlotte. Meanwhile, Rusty and other local musicians are playing a series of benefit concerts this weekend at the Birdsnest in downtown Davidson to raise money for scholarships to the the venue’s summer music camps. It’s a weekend for fundraisers around the area communities with a 10K run-walk, a jazz and art festival and a banquet at Davidson College. Also ahead: the Celebrate Smithville festival in Cornelius, “Metamporphoses” and “Children of a Lesser God” on local stages, and Davidson Farmers Market. And there’s plenty of local music on the calendar as well.

"Children of a Lesser God" opens this week at Armour Street Theatre.

The home finale for Davidson College’s women’s basketball team, performances of “Metamorphoses” and “Children of a Lesser God,” and a celebration honoring one of the area’s oldest communities highlight the available activities in the area this week. The week also includes a fund-raising Jazz and Art Fest Friday night at Davidson’s Homewood Suites. And on Saturday afternoon, the town of Cornelius will cap its Black History Month activities with an event honoring Smithville, whose roots in the 1880s make it one of the area’s oldest communities. Michael Rowland

Popular local organist Michael Rowland will perform on two organs in two parts of Davidson College Presbyterian Church during the next Organ at Davidson concert on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Mr. Rowland, the church’s associate music director and an artist associate at Davidson College, will begin his recital on the mechanical action Ott organ in DCPC’s Lingle Chapel. Then he and his audience will move down the hall into the church sanctuary, where he’ll finish the program on the Wicks organ. Read the full story
