Organist Joseph Roenbeck will accompany the 1928 silent French film “The Passion of Joan of Arc” as the second artist in the 2011-12 Organ at Davidson series Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

The Foundation for Respectability, a Cornelius-based anti-bullying group, this month sponsors an afternoon with Peter, Paul and Mary’s Peter Yarrow and award-winning multi-genre musician Billy Jonas. The singers will perform a special concert, “Don’t Laugh at Me,” at the Knight TheatreOct. 30 at 3 p.m. to promote bully-free school and community environments.

Mr. Yarrow has performed “Don’t Laugh at Me” concerts throughout the U.S. and the world through his nonprofit organization, Operation Respect. The Foundation for Respect Ability, together with Mr. Yarrow’s Operation Respect, works to provide “Don’t Laugh at Me” programs, workshops and concerts in local schools. Read the full story

‘Shake’ things up a bit this weekend and see a new twist on a revered Shakespeare classic, Macbeth, opening Friday. And starting Thursday, spend some time downtown to support  local shops’ fundraisers for Hope in Uganda and Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.  Cap off the weekend with some classical music and even a little football – all happening in Davidson and the surrounding area. What will YOU do this weekend?

The Connie Company — the Davidson Community Players’ youth program — offers its own twist on Macbeth, Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, in five performances over three days beginning Friday night at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.

For a different sort of performance, check out the Hough High Huskies, who Friday night host their rivals, the Hopewell Titans from nearby Huntersville, and the Davidson College Wildcats, who on Saturday host Johnson C. Smith at Richardson Stadium.

Before heading to the theater or the games, head downtown Thursday night – several shops in downtown Davidson will remain open late for Downtown Davidson Ladies Night. La De Daa’s, Monkee’s on Main and the Village Store all will host special events to benefit Acres of Hope in Uganda.

On Saturday morning, grab the kids and head over to Our Town Cinemas in Davidson, which will show “Field of Dreams” and “Ratatouille” beginning at 10 a.m. to raise funds for Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.

And unwind Sunday with a classical music treat. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson will host BachFest IV, featuring concertos by Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli, while Davidson College will hold a concert of Indian music by the ensemble “Vibrations.”

Ever seen “Macbeth”? The Connie Company – Davidson Community Players’ youth program – will put its own twist on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy this week in five performances over three days beginning Friday night. Looking for something more thought-provoking? Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz of Charlotte will talk about her suffering at the hands of the Nazi regime on Monday afternoon at Davidson College. And author Sebastian Junger, whose book “The Perfect Storm” was made into a major motion picture, will deliver a lecture — also at Davidson College — on Tuesday night. Read the full story

The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2011-12 season on Friday, Sept. 16, with and all-Russian program led by Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, including a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Pianot Concerto No. 1″ by Croatian pianist Martina Filjak. For music-lovers who can’t be there in person WDAV-FM, the classical public radio station in Davidson, will broadcast the concert live at 89.9 FM. Read the full story

Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green and Green Day Festival will be Saturday morning in downtown Davidson. Are you running? Meanwhile, have you seen Davidson Community Players’ production of “The Guys” yet? Anne Nelson’s play about healing after 9/11 in New York City concludes its run this weekend at Armour Street Theatre.

Feeling more like catching some good local music? Davidson’s Summit Coffee will hold its Songwriters Showcase Thursday night, while the Mooresville law firm of Homesley and Wingo will host the Blues and Burritos benefit Saturday evening. Also Saturday, Davidson Local plays a benefit for DavidsonNews.net and CorneliusNews.net at Summit.
