Tropic Culture, a 10-person band that plays a Latin-infused blend of pop, rock, and reggae, peforms the next Downtown Davidson Concert on the Green Sunday, Sept. 13. The music runs 6-8 p.m. on the Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road. Read the full story

Tobias Wolff, author of “Old School” and other books, lectures and signs books Tuesday night at Davidson College. Then on Wednesday award-winning journalist and commentator Robin Wright will speak on “Turmoil in Iran: What’s Next?” Both lectures are free.

It’s a weekend for juggling in Davidson, with the Hurricane Hugo Juggling Festival and a Family Vaudeville Extravaganza here on Saturday. On Friday night, the San
dcrawlers play a CD release party at Summit Coffee. And the Davidson Farmers Market has its weekly sales on Saturday next to Town Hall. While you’re downtown, take your car over to CVS for the first of six Saturday car washes to raise money for Easter Seals.
In sports, Davidson’s women’s soccer team plays Villanova Friday night at Alumni Soccer Stadium. Then Saturday night, it’s Davidson’s men vs. USC Upstate.
Meanwhile, take a look at our Theater listings below for a list of events next week during New River Dramatists’ weeklong residency, which includes a variety of public events, including an unusual dramatization Sunday, Sept. 13, called “Visions of the Future” in response to the Davidson Comprehensive Plan now under development with consultants and citizen committees.

Best-selling novelist Dorothy Allison, this year’s McGree visiting professor of writing at Davidson College,
will have a public reading and book signing Monday night at the college union. That’s among the highlights of our busy community calendar this week before Labor Day. Also on the schedule, a pair of juggling-related events: The Hurricane Hugo Juggling Festival with a public juggling session on the Village Green Saturday morning, and a related evening show called the Family Vaudeville Extravaganza. Also: lectures, a documentary film screening and sporting events at the college, and live music at local venues.

Meanwhile, tonight is the opening reception for the faculty art show at Davidson College’s Belk Visual Art Center. And on Saturday, the Davidson Farmers Market runs 8 to noon next to Town Hall.
