Christmas in Davidson is the headline act in a weekend full of winter treats in and around town. The downtown festival runs Thursday through Saturday nights from 6-9. Davidson’s women’s basketball team is home Saturday against Radford. The Lake Norman YMCA hosts its annual breakfast with Santa on Saturday morning, while Davidson College hosts a residency by jazz pianist Harry Pickens, concluding with a free Saturday night concert. Saturday also brings the North Mecklenburg Christmas Parade. On Sunday, Armin’s Catering hosts an open house at historic Beaver Dam, off Davidson-Concord Road, while Davidson College’s annual Christmas Vespers Concert is Sunday night.

The Davidson College music department invites the public to a day of free musical events featuring noted jazz pianist Harry Pickens on Saturday, Dec. 4. Mr. Pickens is a 1981 Davidson alumnus and has collaborated with jazz greats from Dizzy Gillespie to Freddie Hubbard to Milt Jackson.

Looks like a beautiful fall weekend ahead, indoors and out. There’s plenty to see and do, from the debut of the new Harry Potter movie at midnight Thursday at Our Town Cinemas to Davidson College’s theatrical production “Galileo” to a fund-raising Turkey Trot 5K Saturday on the Village Green. There’s music nightly at Summit Coffee, beginning with a songwriter showcase Thursday night. And a cappellafans won’t want to miss Saturday night’s concert at the college, which will raise funds for programs serving children with special needs. On Sunday, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will honor town officials and promote interfaith understanding. And Davidson Historical Society screens the local documentary “Our Vanishing Americana.”
