Ever seen “Macbeth”? The Connie Company – Davidson Community Players’ youth program – will put its own twist on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy this week in five performances over three days beginning Friday night. Looking for something more thought-provoking? Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz of Charlotte will talk about her suffering at the hands of the Nazi regime on Monday afternoon at Davidson College. And author Sebastian Junger, whose book “The Perfect Storm” was made into a major motion picture, will deliver a lecture — also at Davidson College — on Tuesday night. Read the full story

The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2011-12 season on Friday, Sept. 16, with and all-Russian program led by Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, including a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Pianot Concerto No. 1″ by Croatian pianist Martina Filjak. For music-lovers who can’t be there in person WDAV-FM, the classical public radio station in Davidson, will broadcast the concert live at 89.9 FM. Read the full story

Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green and Green Day Festival will be Saturday morning in downtown Davidson. Are you running? Meanwhile, have you seen Davidson Community Players’ production of “The Guys” yet? Anne Nelson’s play about healing after 9/11 in New York City concludes its run this weekend at Armour Street Theatre.

Feeling more like catching some good local music? Davidson’s Summit Coffee will hold its Songwriters Showcase Thursday night, while the Mooresville law firm of Homesley and Wingo will host the Blues and Burritos benefit Saturday evening. Also Saturday, Davidson Local plays a benefit for DavidsonNews.net and CorneliusNews.net at Summit. Case Warnemunde has a dream of building a self-sustaining network of people, artists, and businesses to celebrate all things local. To that end, the Davidson resident’s nonprofit organization Bella Love hosted one of its first big outdoor public events Saturday night, “The Sound of Love” music and art festival at Kenton Place, off West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. Had a tough week at work? Depressed because the kids are back in school? Cheer up – the weekend’s here, and there’s plenty to do – with kids and without. The Carolina Panthers play their final home preseason game on Thursday night, and an Extreme Tailgate Party is planned in downtown Charlotte before the game. The Hurricane Hugo Juggling Festival, including two nights of fire juggling and a world record attempt for most simultaneous paddle ballers, runs Friday to Sunday. And don’t forget the festival’s Vaudeville Extravaganza Saturday night at Davidson College. In Charlotte, Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte will host a tribute to jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, and both Davidson Day and Hough High have high school football games on the road.

On Saturday, a Punt, Pass & Kick competition will be at Smithville Park in Cornelius, the two-day F2C Control Line Airplane Team Racing Trials begins at David B. Waymer Flying Field in Huntersville, while Fall Into Huntersville begins at Discovery Place Kids in downtown Huntersville.
