This week is packed with arts & entertainment opportunities. Auditions for the Davidson Community Players’ production of “Love Letters” are scheduled Monday and Tuesday. The Daylily Book
Club will be discussing “Loving Frank” by Nancy Horan on Tuesday at the Cornelius public library. On Thursday, there’s an opening reception for artists Kendall Buster and Chris Watts at Davidson College Visual Arts Center. North Mecklenburg Community Chorus hosts an open house Monday night. The movie “Tangled” will be playing at North Mecklenburg Park on Friday in Huntersville. Local favorites Davidson Express play this week’s Bluegrass & BBQ fest at CorneliusPresbyterian Church. The Warrior Dash comes to Rural Hill on Saturday, while Sunday brings a piano and organ concert on Sunday at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.

Summit Coffee hosts its August Songwriters Showcase on Thursday, featuring Billy Jones, Lindy Dobbins, Rob McHale and Mike Alicke. Public radio station WFAE-FM in Charlotte hosts an open house Friday to mark its
30th anniversary. Cornelius Presbyterian Church’s Bluegrass and BBQ Festival and Cornelius’s 70s Night in the Park are both on Saturday. The weekend comes to a close with a Concert on the Green with the Rusty Knox Band.

ReadDavidson kicks off the 2011 Davidson community reading series this week with a screening Tuesday of the movie “The Help,” based on this year’s book. The next Summit Songwriters Showcase is Thursday, featuring Billy Jones, Lindy Dobbins, host Rob McHale and opening act Mike Alicke. On Friday, WFAE-FM celebrates its 30th anniversary with an open house at its University City studios. It’s 70s Night in the Park on Saturday in Bailey Road Park, with Da Throwback Band, while the Rusty Knox Band plays a Davidson Concert on the GreenSunday. And just a reminder: Summit Coffee in Davidson is closed Monday while they install new counters.

What’s your fancy this weekend? It’s a busy one, from sports to music to a Davidson Wildcats fan day. The International Tournament of Champions wheelchair basketball tourney continues, with championship games Saturday at Lake Norman Charter School. The newly
formed North Carolina Baroque Orchestra performs Friday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House. The weekly Davidson Farmer’s Market is in downtown Davidson Saturday morning. At midday Saturday, Cornelius Presbyterian Church is hosting its Bluegrass & BBQ festival, while Davidson College’s Wildcat Fans Dayis on the Davidson Village Green.

Thursday starts off the weekend’s events with Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx speaking at a Lake Norman Chamber
lunch, an artist reception in Cornelius for the Aspiring Artists Student Exhibit and a Songwriter Showcase at Summit Coffee in Davidson. The curtain rises Thursday night on “Moon Over Buffalo” and continues through the weekend at Davidson College. On Friday, kids can bring their lunches to the Davidson public library for the movie “Tangled” at noon. Also on Friday, the McGuire Nuclear Station will be screening the movie “Rio” outside at the EnergyExplorium. The outdoor Lake, Land & Lyrics festival in Mooresville Saturday features the music of Boyz II Men and benefits Autism Services of Mecklenburg County. Also Saturday, Cornelius PARC’s Beach Bash features the music of the North Tower Band at Bailey Road Park.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," the last film in the series, opens with a midnight show Thursday at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson and other theaters.
Our week begins with meetings – Lake Norman Marine Commission Monday, and both the Mecklenburg County Commission and Davidson Town Board Tuesday. On Wednesday, don’t be alarmed when you hear the McGuire Nuclear Station sirens being tested at 11:50 a.m. On Thursday, there’s a blood drive at Ben & Jerry’s, where donors receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream. Bonita Knott, “the barefoot poet,” performs Friday and Saturday at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. On Saturday, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mooresville hosts a Community Fest with yard sale, farmer’s market and community business expo.
