Twisters Shag Club begins another round of lessons this week. (Twisters Shag Club)

Public meetings and community and service group gatherings are on this week’s community calendar in the Lake Norman area, along with variety of other activities from trivia nights to music.

The Huntersville “Happy Hour” Rotary Club will meets Monday at 5:30pm at Dressler’s in Birkdale Village. At 7pm Monday, the Lake Norman Marine Commission has its monthly meeting at the Charles Mack Citizens Center in downtown Mooresville. Read for more highlights from This Week’s calendar.

Our Events Calendar offers many possibilities this weekend, from the downtown Cornelius 2nd Friday Art Crawl to art openings to live music. Saturday brings the Davidson Farmer’s Market and a the Beast Feast food truck festival at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Comedy fans can catch The Chuckleheads Saturday night at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, with their “Dog Days of Summer” show. The new Turning Pointe dance and performing arts studio celebrates is grand opening in Cornelius Saturday. Read the full story

Who can avoid acknowledging the impending start of school, with all the fabulous Target commercials airing? They are brilliantly crafted with enough cuteness to fill up an entire student body’s worth of backpacks. But, as any young student or parent can tell you, it’s not all primary colors, pencils, and coordinated outfits. There’s also a certain amount of anxiety this time of year as evidenced by the marching band version of super group Queen’s “Pressure” in the background. I can recall my own nervousness and sleepless nights as it approached pondering how the year would shape up. Would I like my teachers? Would they like me? Would my friends be in my class? Where would I sit at lunch and with whom? And, more importantly, what would I wear? You know, the answers to life’s big questions and more that would only be revealed after the first day. The Second Friday Crawl in downtown Cornelius continues this Friday, Aug. 9, in and around the Oak Street Mill, 19725 Oak St. The evening will offer a pedestrian friendly path of art, craft, culture and community. Area businesses will remain open through the evening and promote their products/services/causes in a casual setting.

The crawl will include food trucks and live music. Artisans will be selling their wares in the spaces between shops. Bella Love studios will be open to spotlight an emerging local artist for an individual gallery show.

This weekend saw a big treat for Davidson music fans as home-grown Lake Norman band Chasing Pedestrians performed for a crowd of about 100 at Carrburritos Taqueria in Davidson Saturday night.

The five-piece band included founding members lead singer and pianist Michaela Amato, guitarist Steven Gilmore and drummer Chris Grunert. They played a variety of covers as well as originals in a blend that kept the large crowd entertained for the duration of the playlist. Read the full story

From art to music, the Community Arts Project has always been dedicated to enriching people all ages through the arts. Now, after five and a half years sharing space in the Cornelius Arts Center, in the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius, the group is turning a new page and relocating to a space in The Chair Factory, at 20700 N Main St.

The move comes after two years of planning and after changes in CAP’s agreement with the Town of Cornelius, which runs the arts center.  The nonprofit found the new offices with the help of Lake Norman Realty.  The plan is to open on Sept. 16, with hopes of expanding in the winter to include a shop selling work produced by the center’s artists.

“It’s a big achievement for us after such a long search for an affordable property that would work, so we’re thrilled,” director Cathy Templeton said. Read the full story
