Enjoy lectures, related events, and other activities as we begin our first weekend of Fall. Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius hosts its annual BBQ, Bake Sale, and Silent Auction all day Thursday, with barbecue for drive through, eat in, or carry out.  Thursday night at Davidson College, Pulitzer prize-winning photographer José Galvez will talk about his work documenting the experience of Latinos in the US at 7pm in Davidson College’s Belk Visual Arts Center.

Oak Street Mill is becoming the hub for art and entertainment in Cornelius and Bella Love Inc. will host the first in a series of monthly shows called LIVE! at Oak Street Mill, 19725 Oak St., this Friday, Sept. 27 at 8pm.
The inaugural show will feature the electrifying sounds of Monotone Maggie, Knowne Ghost, and The Calm &  Repose, as well as a live collaborative painting by Justin Christenbery, Adam McGalliard and Cordell Ferguson.

The Town of Davidson will host the annual downtown Davidson Halloween March on Friday, Oct. 25, as part of an afternoon and evening festival that will include a Concert on the Green.

The afternoon begins at 4pm with games on the Village Green. Costumed kids and parents will start lining near Town Hall by 5pm. Merchants and other organizations will hand out treats as kids parade along Main Street. Following the march will be a Concert on the Green featuring Rough Draft will run from 6-8pm.

Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz

Several community organization meetings and lectures are on the calendar this week, as well as a local high school soccer matchup. This week also brings the annual Bethel Church BBQ, Bake Sale and Silent Auction, on Thursday in Cornelius.  And the Amazing Maize Maze, a cornfield adventure, is open again this weekend at Rural Hill in Huntersville.  Tonight (Monday), Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz will give a talk titled “Perpetrators Through the Eyes of the Victims” at Davidson College. CORNELIUS – Knowne Ghost performed at Bella Love’s open mic night at Kadi Fit Thursday, impressing the audience with a polished sound on their original rock tunes.  The band features a group of Lake Norman-area musicians, all in their 20s, who play and carry themselves with a calm, collected maturity.

They are: Cade Ratcliff (vocals and guitar), John  Youngblood (guitar), Bobby Thomas (drums), and Jordan Daugherty (bass).

Last month I had a crazy idea that I would “tri” it. Let me explain.

This year hasn’t unfolded as planned. Certain events plummeted life into a tailspin completely disrupting my routine. In the midst of interrupting the norm, willpower flew out the window. And by willpower I mean ability to not solve problems with cheesecake. 

I began the year with good intentions: running on the beach in January, 5Ks in the Spring, Cooper River Bridge Run in April. I wrote about these activities here, and my desire to be fit and active. Read the full story
