This weekend, numerous community events and fundraisers are on the calendar, as well as lectures and theatre openings. Tonight, the North Mecklenburg Woman’s Club hosts their 5th annual “Over the Tabletop Fundraiser” to benefit the Build Betty a House project at 6pm at the Peninsula Country Club. They will also gather tomorrow at 10am. Two independent movies have been filming in the area over the past couple of weeks, attracting curiosity and questions. We’ve tracked down some information about the flicks “Captive” and “Mountaintop.” Meanwhile, the Indies + Docs film series at Cornelius Arts Center will be back on Saturday, Nov. 16, with the Beatles documentary “Good Ol’ Freda,” while the Davidson Film Club is back Nov. 23 with “Broken.” Read the full story

Election day is just around the corner, and so are numerous other events across the Lake Norman region. Davidson College’s annual Reynolds Lecture Monday night at 7:30 features playwright David Henry Hwang, author of the 1988 play M. Butterfly. Other lectures this week include on “Exploring the Milky Way” Tuesday at St. Alban’s Church in Davidson. Weekend highlights include the 19th Annual Sheep Dog Trials and Dog Festival at Rural Hill in Huntersville, an the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s annual campout at Fisher Farm. Concerts, lectures, a Harry Potter-themed dinner at Vail Commons, and performances of the play “Reckless” are among the many public events this month at Davidson College. Robin Emmons, the founder of the farming and food nonprofit “Sow Much Good,” will give the annual Chidsey Leadership Lecture on Nov. 13. And United Nations development official Paul Ladd will give the annual Bank of America Lecture on Nov. 19.
