The year is winding down, and several communities in the region are holding final civic meetings before the start of 2014. The Lincoln County Commission is expected to consider plans by Strata Solar LLC for a solar farm near Lake Norman at its meeting Monday at 6:30pm in Lincolnton. The bimonthly Cornelius Town Board meeting is at 7pm at Cornelius Town Hall. Exams are in full swing on the Davidson College campus, where public events have come to a halt. To close its 2013 season, the Davidson Community Players in conjunction with Lux Radio Theatre have converted the compact Armour Street Theatre into the imaginary radio studio to produce, “Miracle on 34th Street”  during the holidays.

Davidson Community Players Executive Director Matt Merrell not only has cleverly adapted the Christmas classic into radio broadcast format, he also directs the show. The altered format means that instead of memorizing lines, the actors perform with scripts in hand. This technique requires an actor to portray a character encumbered by the need to read while interpreting a personality simultaneously. It’s a challenge. Although most of the cast is new to the Armour Street boards, they pull it off gracefully, maintaining the standards of excellence DCP is known to deliver. Read the full story

We are fortunate as residents of Davidson and Cornelius to live in an area rich with holiday lighting traditions. Whether our destination is McAdenville, the quaint little textile mill town a short drive south on I-85, known for fanciful, Christmas-themed yard decorations (a favorite every year, expect traffic,) Troutman for Zootastic Park of Lake Norman’s Christmas Wonderland of Lights, or Concord’s Speedway Christmas light show with 3 million lights in spectacular fashion on display, we have options.

My pick this weekend takes us to neighboring Belmont, for another option at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Holidays at the Garden is a grand transformation of the grounds from botanical garden to an elegant winter fairyland draped in lights. Read the full story

Bundle up and head out to one of the many events across the Lake Norman Region this week. Thursday at 5pm, the Community School of Davidson will lost a ribbon cutting for its new ArtSpace at the school. The event will include a food truck rally from 5-8, and a ribbon cutting at 5:45 with Mayor Woods. With a forecast of cold and rain for Saturday, Huntersville Parks & Rec has rescheduled the A Huntersville Christmas from Saturday to Sunday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 6pm. Just a reminder that roads in the downtown area will be closed between 12:30 and 7 on Sunday. Read the full story
