“My Only Chance for Real Happiness” is among the works by Douglas Floyd at Davidson College’s Belk Visual Arts Center, opening Thursday.

This Weekend is a weekend for the arts, with numerous live music performances, the opening of Hairspray: The Musical, art openings and the Second Friday Art Crawl, and a film presented by the Davidson Film Club. Environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck and a team of volunteers showed off their completed installation “Markers of Our Lives” at the Cornelius Arts Center Friday night, a carefully laid assemblage of bottle caps, wine corks and other recycled items.

The creation is a “community mandala,” modeled after intricate sand paintings created by Tibetan monks. It’s designed to prompt reflection the things we use every day that become throwaways. But because they’re made of plastic, they don’t really go away – they’re “forever,” Holsenbeck said. Read the full story

A program Thursday in Mooresville examines the growing presence of coyotes in urban areas.

This week, enjoy a reading by Tony Abbott from his new book, “The Angel Dialogues,” or listen to a talk by artist Yvonne Petkus, whose exhibition “Searching” opens at Davidson College Thursday. Religion professor Richard Miller is in town this week to give two lectures on empathy and religion, and the Davidson Town Board and Lake Norman Marine Commission both meet this week. The next Davidson Senior Scholars meeting is this Wednesday, March 12, 2014, with a lecture on  “Changing Leadership in China, Understanding the Implications” by Davidson College professor Shelley Rigger.
