As summer in Davidson gets into full swing, our calendar is a busy one. Davidson Community Players’ “West Side Story” opens Thursday at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. The weekend brings a pair of community fund-raisers: Amity & Bailey’s South Main Square block party Friday will support United Family Services. Then Saturday, Ada Jenkins Center, a regional community services center on Gamble Street, hosts its “Fire” fund-raiser, with a morning 5k road race and all-day music and food. The event includes local jugglers’ performing for World Juggling Day.

Also Saturday and Sunday, the Cowbell Challenge mountain bike competition returns to Fisher Farm Park, off Shearer Road. The regional mountain biking event includes a Saturday morning marathon that will take riders through town streets. (Traffic may be blocked along the route.) It’s part of USA Cycling’s 2009 National Ultra Endurance Calendar, and is expected to attract top national riders.

Meetings this week include the Design Review Board, which on Wednesday will take up proposed alterations and signs at 131 N. Main St., where Davidson College plans a shop to sell logo clothing and souvenirs.

Our weekend in and around Davidson is chock full of intriguing possibilities: A new musical combo Blue Rooster makes its Davidson debut tonight (Thursday), leading off a weekend of local music at Summit Coffee. Saturday morning it’s “Bee Day” at the Davidson Farmers Market, focusing on bees and beekeeping. Saturday, the Lake Norman Family YMCA has its Live at the Lake Hawaiian Luau fund-raiser, morning running race and fun day. (Volunteers needed. See below.)

Onstage, “An Empty Plate in the Grand Cafe du Boeuf” continues at Warehouse Performing Arts Center, Cornelius. It’s “Girls Night Out” on the McConnell Green Friday night with a free movie screening of “Mama Mia” in a neighborhood fund-raiser for the Avon breast cancer walk coming up in October. It’s a busy week in and around Davidson, with Town Board and school board meetings, a Concert on the Green Sunday, and a free outdoor movie downtown Wednesday. Most schools close their doors for the summer this week, with public schools getting out Wednesday.

Tuesday night has a pair of meetings. The Town Board’s monthly session includes a vote on the 2009-10 town budget, as well as a developer’s affordable housing plan for the Bradford neighborhood. At the same time in Charlotte, the Charlotte Mecklenburg school board will be holding a public hearing on the proposed boundaries for the new Bailey Road high school in Cornelius. Davidson will be in the zone for the new school, which is scheduled for a 2010 opening. Read the full story
