Organ at Davidson
The annual Bach Birthday Bash, in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 327th birthday, will become an audience challenge at the next Organ at Davidson concert Tuesday, March 20. Organists will playt variety of works that may or may not have been written by Bach himself. The audience will be invited to guess – Bach or merely “Bach-ian”?

St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching, with a variety of events throughout the area celebrating the most recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. Or maybe celebrating food, friends and fun. From the traditional all-day bash at Galway Hooker in Cornelius to second-annual Green River Revival on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, there’s plenty to choose from.  Meanwhile, the Society for American Music pays a visit to Davidson College Thursday for presentations and an evening GospelSHOUT concert. An exhibit of oil paintings by Davidson College art professor Nathaniel Rogers will open with a reception Wednesday night, March 14, at 7 p.m. in the Van Every Gallery of the Belk Visual Arts Center at Davidson College. The exhibit, “Secret Things, Tiny Rituals,” includes 20 paintings depicting figures in fairy-tale or theatrical settings, but in the midst of unexpected behavior, such as setting fires, shooting weapons, or using knives or hammers.

A major annual literary lecture featuring poet Edward Hirsch, a pair of art exhibits at Davidson College, lots of music, four Saturday road races and a St. Patrick’s Day event at the U.S. National Whitewater Center highlight a week of activities throughout the area. Abigail Lennox sings Saturday at St. Alban's in a concert with Earl's Chair called "Deer's Cry: Music of the Celtic Saints."

An eclectic mix of the musical and performing arts highlight our calendar of events and activities the area this weekend – from Celtic and jazz concerts at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church to local bands at various venues to several stage productions, including “Children of a Lesser God” at Davidson Community Players’ Armour Street Theatre.

On the musical side, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson will hold two unique performances this weekend — a Celtic music concert on Saturday night featuring singer Abigail Lennox and Celtic duo Earl’s Chair, and hymns and spirituals by the Mark Sterbank Jazz Group on Sunday afternoon.
