How many of this year’s Academy Award-winning films have you seen? Still a few left on your list? Beginning Wednesday, Our Town Cinemas in Davidson will have the three top Oscar winners, including “The Hurt Locker,” which is currently not in theaters.
“The Hurt Locker” won Best Picture Sunday. Also showing will be “Crazy Heart,” which won Best Actor for Jeff Bridges; and “Blind Side,” with Sandra Bullock (Best Actress). Those films will be in rotation this week with “Alice in Wonderland” and “Shutter Island” Wednesday and Thursday. Then beginning Friday, “The Green Zone” joins the mix, replacing “Shutter Island.” (For showtimes, see our Showtimes listing on the main Guide page.) Read the full story

Davidson Community Players open their production of “Violet” on Thursday night for a 15-show run. “Violet” is an award-winning musical about the civil rights era, based on a short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Statesville author Doris Betts. And coming up, the local theater calendar also includes a March 25-28 Davidson College production of Ken Ludwig’s “Leading Ladies,” a comedy about a pair of struggling Shakespearean actors in rural Pennsylvania.
Our community calendar in and around Davidson this week brings art, music and theater, as well as public meetings. The Town Board monthly meeting is Tuesday, as is an organizational meeting for parents of future Hough High students.
Mary Margaret Shepherd said this week she is leaving as interim director of campus ministry at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Also, local churches have listed a variety of events in the coming days and weeks, from a potluck lunch at Davidson United Methodist Church on Sunday to a ballet performance on Easter at River’s Edge Church.
