A slew of fund-raisers is coming this weekend and in the near future, aiding Haitian earthquake victims, providing money for Rotary Club projects and helping to fund emergency home repairs in the area. Yucky weather could crimp plans for a second straight weekend, but we know some events will go on as scheduled. Saturday’s Souper Bowl cook-off, a fund-raiser for Davidson Housing Coalition’s emergency home-repair program, takes place Saturday at Davidson College. There’s music at Summit Coffee. The winter tailgate farmers market is back next to Town Hall Saturday. And Davidson College men’s men’s basketball game against Georgia Southern Saturday night includes the 2nd annual Kicks from Cats fund-raiser. Buy the red T-shirt, or wear red. Read the full story

Davidson Community Players will host a free screening of the movie “Boycott” next Thursday, Feb. 11, in a program that provides a bit of context for the theater group’s March production of the Broadway hit “Violet.”
The screening begins at 7 p.m., at Our Town Cinemas in Sadler Square, off Griffith Street. (NOTE: As of Feb. 5, reservations for this event were all taken.)
“Boycott” is set in Montgomery, Ala., at the start of the American civil rights movement. It is a historical narrative using file footage and re-enacted scenes to captures the prevailing sentiments of the period.
