Christmas in Davidson ornament 2010

The Town of Davidson and downtown merchants are selling the annual Christmas in Davidson ornament, which promotes the annual downtown festival and this year depicts and raises money for the campaign to keep open the Davidson public library branch. Also, the youth of Davidson United Methodist Church are selling box dinners Thursday night during Christmas in Davidson, to support a summer Costa Rica mission trip, and the YMCA is holding its annual Breakfast with Santa. Looks like a beautiful fall weekend ahead, indoors and out. There’s plenty to see and do, from the debut of the new Harry Potter movie at midnight Thursday at Our Town Cinemas to Davidson College’s theatrical production “Galileo” to a fund-raising Turkey Trot 5K Saturday on the Village Green. There’s music nightly at Summit Coffee, beginning with a songwriter showcase Thursday night. And a cappellafans won’t want to miss Saturday night’s concert at the college, which will raise funds for programs serving children with special needs. On Sunday, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will honor town officials and promote interfaith understanding. And Davidson Historical Society screens the local documentary “Our Vanishing Americana.”

The Davidson Generals are among three a cappella groups performing at Saturday's benefit.

A Davidson College student group called The Buddy System that helps kids with special needs will host a concert by three campus a cappella groups on Saturday to help raise money for and awareness of children with special needs.

The Generals, The Delilahs, and Androgyny will sing at the event on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m., at the college’s Duke Family Performance Hall.

Our community calendar this week is packed with fund-raisers, dramatic productions, meetings, lectures, seminars, and other events. Dr. James Zogby, president of the Arab-American Institute on Monday will talk about his new book “Arab Voices: What Are they saying to Us and Why It matters.” On Tuesday, Scott Bosley, this year’s James K. Batten Professor of Public Policy at Davidson, will give the annual Batten Lecture, on the topic “Democracy and the Democratization of News-A Question Hangs in the Ether: Will Both be Well-Served?”

On stage, Davidson College theater department’s production of Brecht’s “Galileo” debuts  on Wednesday, while Davidson Community Players’ “Once on This Island” continues at the weekend.  Davidson College’s Sigma Phi Epsilon hosts a 5K fund-raising Turkey Trot 5K fun run/walk on the Village Green Saturday morning to aid the Free Clinic of Our Towns. And there’s an a cappella concert Saturday night as a fund-raiser for children with special needs. On Sunday, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will honor town officials and promote interfaith understanding.

David Glukh Klezmer Ensemble from New York plays Sunday at Music @ St. Alban's.

Lectures, sports, and plenty of music are on tap this week in and around Davidson. Wednesday brings the “Over the Tabletop” showcase and fund-raiser at River Run, for Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS home repair program. On Thursday through Saturday, Davidson College hosts the 2010 Northern Pacific conference field hockey championship at Belk Turf Field. Hough High’s football team hosts Mallard Creek in the final game of the regular season Friday. And on Sunday afternoon, Music @ St. Alban’s presents New York’s David Glukh Klezmer Ensemble. And can Davidson Wildcats basketball really be back already?
