Meanwhile, tonight is the opening reception for the faculty art show at Davidson College’s Belk Visual Art Center. And on Saturday, the Davidson Farmers Market runs 8 to noon next to Town Hall.

From art opening to concert by Nickel Creek’s Chris Thile, a busy month

Here’s a list of public events at Davidson College in September, from lectures and music to performances and films. The list includes this Thursday’s gallery talk and opening for the “2009 Studio Art Professors Exhibition” and the exhibit “Cristina Toro: Alive on the Intricate Earth Under Trees.”

Coming up next week: On Wednesday, Sept. 2, Gill Holland Jr. will present and talk about his documentary film “Flow: For Love of Water.” Also, the “Family Vaudeville Extravaganza” returns Saturday, Sept. 5, as part of the Hurricane Hugo Juggling Festival. And Tobias Wolff, author of “This Boy’s Life and Old School” and other books, will speak Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, here’s a ticket to buy in advance: At month’s end, the Artist’s Series brings in The Punch Brothers with Chris Thile. Mr. Thile is an acclaimed mandolinist who made his name with Nickel Creek. Read on for more. Read the full story

Davidson College classes begin today (Monday) and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools students return on Tuesday. Our community calendar this week is filled with back-to-school and end-of-summer events, from an elementary school open house Monday to Thursday’s opening of the fall faculty art exhibit at Davidson College.

A representative from U.S. Rep. Mel Watt’s office will hold satellite office hours at Town Hall Monday. And the Davidson Town Board holds its monthly work session Tuesday, with a presentation on the ongoing Comprehensive Plan process.

Come to our show Saturday night. So said Arrie Bozeman and Shana Blake, of Wavy Space, who were strumming on their guitars outside Summit Coffee Thursday afternoon. They’re among the activities in and around Davidson this weekend. Also on tap: a series of kids’ theater performances by The Connie Co., Davidson Community Players’ children’s theater group, and a fund-raising Art Walk in Cornelius. And if you’re inclined to get up on stage yourself, Saturday will bring the annual combined auditions of Metrolina Theatre Association, in Charlotte.

Plenty of activities around the area this weekend, from a free program on Reiki therapy this evening at Davidson public library branch to a free “Beach Bash in the Park” concert in Cornelius Friday, to Summit Coffee’s Saturday night lineup, which includes live music with Chas Willoman and Friends and an opening reception of an exhibit with new paintings by 2009 Davidson College graduate Ana Kozhevnikova. And don’t forget the Davidson Farmers Market on Saturday morning dowtown, where guitarist Billy Jones is featured and kids will be making snow cones.

Our weekend in and around Davidson is chock full of intriguing possibilities: A new musical combo Blue Rooster makes its Davidson debut tonight (Thursday), leading off a weekend of local music at Summit Coffee. Saturday morning it’s “Bee Day” at the Davidson Farmers Market, focusing on bees and beekeeping. Saturday, the Lake Norman Family YMCA has its Live at the Lake Hawaiian Luau fund-raiser, morning running race and fun day. (Volunteers needed. See below.)

Onstage, “An Empty Plate in the Grand Cafe du Boeuf” continues at Warehouse Performing Arts Center, Cornelius. It’s “Girls Night Out” on the McConnell Green Friday night with a free movie screening of “Mama Mia” in a neighborhood fund-raiser for the Avon breast cancer walk coming up in October.
