Things are quiet in Davidson as colleges, schools and businesses break for the holidays. Area churches take center stage this weekend, with a variety of Christmas eve services and music planned.

At the weekend, you’ll find free music at Summit Coffee and Brickhouse Tavern, as well as a free bassoon-clarinet concert Sunday by the Cain family at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

CHURCH MOVES TO YMCA

The Church of the Good Shepherd moved this fall from South Street to the Lake Norman YMCA, where members now gather on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.

Led by Pastor Kyle Wallace and supported by a director of music and the arts, a Pastor to Students, and a Director of Children’s Ministry, Good Shepherd emphasizes the three great streams of Christian heritage – Scripture, Sacrament, and Spirit – in its weekly worship. With a focus on both biblical preaching and Holy Communion, each gathering is designed to equip those for whom Christ died to experience life beyond belief.

This weekend in Davidson will be quiet as the holidays approach, but not without a few high points. The men’s basketball team plays at home on Thursday night before heading to New York City to play Cornell on Sunday. Be sure to visit the Davidson Farmer’s Market on Saturday for baked goods and produce for your holiday festivities.

The Armour Street Theatre hosts three shows of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” on Saturday in a fund-raiser for Davidson-Cornelius Day Care, while “It’s a Wonderful Life” continues there through Sunday. And if you’re looking for a true Christmas event, look no further than the Cornelius Presbyterian Church “Noel Celebration.”

On Friday, enjoy the music and beverages at Summit Coffee and make a donation to the family of Jorge Fiscal Cruz, the Davidson restaurant worker who was recently killed in a traffic accident.

Thursday also brings a blood drive at the Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville.

Beggar Boys, ‘Wonderful Life,’ Hanukkah celebrations

The Beggar Boys with former Davidson musician Kate Minogue play a pair of area concerts this weekend – Saturday in Mooresville and Sunday afternoon in the Music at St. Alban’s series. Lake Norman Jewish Congregation hosts a community Hanukkah celebration Friday evening at Charles Mack Citizens Center in Mooresville, while Beth Shalom of Lake Norman has its celebration Sunday at noon, at Mooresville Town Square.

On stage: Woodlawn School’s Red Barn Players perform “The Curious Savage” (see Theater below). Davidson Community Players present “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” Saturday in a fund-raiser for Davidson-Cornelius Day Care. And “It’s a Wonderful Life” continues its run at Armour Street Theatre, though you may have trouble finding a ticket.

Come out and enjoy the festive mood during the 21st annual celebration Thursday to Saturday nights, 6-p.m. in downtown Davidson.

This year’s festival will have a more local flavor – literally – than some years past, says Margaret Martens, who helped to plan the event for the Town of Davidson. Local restaurants will be serving most of the food and local nonprofit organizations will have booths. “We’ve got the right balance this year,” Ms. Martens said. “People just like to see Davidson restaurants and local nonprofits involved.”

Organizers expect around 25,000 people to attend.

Adults, children and pets will find a wide range of activities, including horse-drawn carriage rides, strolling Victorian carolers, a children’s train (on Thursday and Saturday), a Doggie Fashion Show, free hayrides through the college campus and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Local restaurants and merchants will be open for holiday dining and shopping; many will offer special holiday-themed activities.

Frosty’s Food Court will feature dishes from many of Davidson’s restaurants. And you can support local non-profits when you purchase special offerings at their booths. Under the tent on the Village Green, find snacks including chocolates, gingerbread, cookies or s’mores roasted over an outdoor fire pit.

Parking

There is lots of free parking on Main Street and Jackson Street, at South Main Square, along local side streets and in lots on Jackson Street. A free trolley runs from the Cotton Mill with stops along Main Street to pick up and take you where you want to go.

ATMs

Several ATMs are available on Main Street, in the Stowe Building and at Exit 30.

Restrooms

Public restrooms are available at town hall, the Davidson Public Library, DUMC and DCPC as well as many local businesses and restaurants.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY ORNAMENT

The Davidson Historical Society is selling its 2nd annual pewter holiday ornament, featuring the Helper Hotel (aka Carolina Inn), circa 1848. Ornaments are $12 and available at the DHS table (in front of Ink to Go) during Christmas in Davidson. After Christmas in Davidson, ornaments will be available at various downtown shops.

Christmas in Davidson runs Thursday to Saturday nights, and is expected to bring thousands to downtown Davidson for music, food, carriage rides and a visit from Santa. Don’t forget the north Mecklenburg Christmas parade Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. downtown. And in keeping with the holiday theme, Davidson College Presbyterian Church’s annual Christmas Vespers will be Sunday. And Davidson Community Players opens “It’s a Wonderful Life” Thursday night. The nearly-sold out show has 15 performances through Dec. 22.

And at the college Saturday night, choose between a jazz concert with New York saxophonist Tim Armacost and the Davidson Jazz Ensemble, or the annual Red and Black Ball, a fund-raiser for children with AIDS and Mwandi Christian Mission Hospital.
