A delegation of youth and adults from Davidson College Presbyterian Church is in Louisiana this week to work Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to rebuild houses for those impacted by hurricane Katrina. DCPC will also host Dr. James ‘Mickey’ Efird in August to lead a discussion about the misunderstood Book of Revelations. The New Community of Faith in Davidson is holding discussions on A Generous Orthodoxy and faith journeys beginning in late July. Opportunities for children include the Vacation Bible School at Mt. Davidson Community Players are in the heat of rehearsals this week for the upcoming production of “Noises Off,” which hits the stage July 22 at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall.

Meanwhile, July 22 also brings an opening for “Fast Trip to Omaha,” a new local play at the intimate Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.

Dr. Mehmet Oz

It’s a slow mid-summer week as everyone recovers from Fourth of July festivities. Dr. Mehmet Oz, a heart expert of “The Dr. Oz Show” and “Oprah” fame, returns to Mooresville Wednesday to give a talk benefiting the HealthReach Community Clinic. Lawyers from the McIntosh Law Firm will give a free seminar Thursday at YMCA on “Real Estate – Buy, Sell or Rent?” Mooresville also has art show openings at The Depot and Artworks on Main Friday, and the Davidson Farmers’ Market will be open as usual on Saturday.

This Fourth of July weekend is full of celebrations. Saturday features community gatherings in Davidson and Mooresville, while Sunday’s events will be in Birkdale, Charlotte, Cornelius. The Davidson celebration on the Village Green Saturday includes a parade and a Concert on the Green. They’ll have the Lake Norman Orchestra and fireworks Saturday at Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville and Sunday in Charlotte. Cornelius’s event Sunday includes music and ends with an outdoor screening of the film “Avatar.” And don’t forget the Davidson Farmers’ Market downtown on Saturday.
