With Davidson students back in town, life is returning to campus this week. The week kicks off with a much-anticipated campus concert featuring Maroon 5. “American Idol” winner Kris Allen and British singer VV Brown are also on the bill. Wednesday brings the Freshman Cake Race, in which first-year students compete for cakes donated by local residents. The men’s soccer team takes on Pfeiffer in an exhibition game that night as well. Davidson College Freshman Orientation continues this weekend with daily events, including Friday’s “Farewell Lunch” for parents and Friday night’s Freshman Olympics. And look for those frosh walking through town Saturday morning during the annual “Service Walk.” Davidson men’s and women’s soccer kick off their seasons this weekend with home games: The men host N.C. State in an exhibition game on Saturday, and the women will face Wilmington on Sunday.

Local bluegrass combo Davidson Express plays Saturday morning at the Cornelius Presbyterian Church’s Bluegrass Saturdays series. And the lineup of live music at Summit Coffee on Main Street this weekend  begins tonight with Summit Songwriters in the Round. Read the full story

This week features a Senior Luau and fund-raiser Wednesday at the North Meck Senior Center on West Catawba in Cornelius. All proceeds will go towards the creation of new programs for area seniors. Davidson College freshmen (Class of 2014) will arrive on campus Wednesday for orientation activities that include the annual Service Walk around town Saturday. Cannon School plays its inaugural home football game this Friday vs. North Raleigh Christian. Saturday brings the weekly Davidson Farmers Market downtown next to Town Hall. Vianello Trio.

Mt. Zion Methodist Church, at 19600 Zion Street in Cornelius, will host a series of four instrumental and choral concerts this fall. The first, featuring the Vianello Trio, will be on Sept. 19. All concerts are at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary and are free and open to the public.

Thursday is “Don’t Drive Day” when local drivers can improve Charlotte air quality by using public transportation, walking, or biking, or even telecommuting. This weekend is the last for the run of Warehouse Performing Arts Center’s popular play, “Fast Trip to Omaha.” There are performances each day, to see the show before it ends. The Rusty Knox Band will also be playing twice, on Friday at Prosciutto’s restaurant, and Saturday at The Wine Cellar. The weekly Davidson Farmers Market will run on Saturday, so visit to get some fresh, local produce or baked goods. Our Town Cinemas will open a new movie on Friday, “The Other Guys.” This action comedy stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as two New York City detectives who take on a case to try and imitate the best cops in the city, but which might be too much for them to handle.

Davidson’s community calendar this week brings a open house at the public library branch on Tuesday, where members of the Davidson Library Task Force will kick off a “Pave the Way to Save the Library” fund-raising campaign. Come “buy a brick” to help fund library operations, meet the library staff, and learn more about volunteer opportunities. The “Paws to Read” program will also run during the open house for preschool and elementary school aged children. Also Tuesday, the planned Davidson Rotary Club holds another organizing meeting and area towns host a series of safety events on National Night Out. This week, you’ll have a couple of opportunities to see Davidson’s Rusty Knox Band perform live: Friday at Prosciutto’s and Saturday The Wine Cellar. And due to popular demand, the Warehouse Performing Arts Center has extended its production of “Fast Trip to Omaha” through this week.
