It’s time to think spring!  Actually, it’s time to think about all the seasons, since “Through the Seasons” is the theme of the 26th Davidson Horticultural Symposium sponsored by the Davidson Garden Club.

The registration deadline is Monday for the March 2 event, held at Davidson College.

Participants will enjoy a day of talks by experts on gardening topics, including a key note address by master garden designer Gary Smith.

The symposium will be held in the Knobloch Campus Center on the Davidson College campus.  (The students are on Spring Break so parking and meeting space should not be an issue.)

The symposium provides a full day from 9-4 including lunch, Davidson College Aboretum tours and book signings.

This year speakers will focus on how to help gardeners plan for the evolution of the garden.  Mr. Smith’s keynote address will begin at 9:15 a.m. on the topic, “Aging gracefully: designing a Southern garden for your lifetime.”  After a coffee break, educator and writer Allan Armitage will offer a talk starting at 11 a.m. titled, “So you think you like plants: Annuals, perennials, bulbs and vines that will feed your habit.”

Afternoon sessions will run from 1:45-2:45 an d feature such topics as heirloom plants, vegetable gardens and garden diaries.

Saturday brings two local food events: the Davidson Farmers Market downtown and public tours of 9 area farms, organized by Davidson-based Know Your Farms LLC.  Meanwhile, there’s plenty of live music at local venues. At noon Friday, there’s a free “Musical Interlude” concert at Davidson College with this year’s music scholarship winners. On Saturday evening, the town of Cornelius hosts a big band concert at Bailey Road Park. And Sunday afternoon brings a “Bachfest,” the opening concert in this year’s Music at St. Alban’s concert series.

This weekend is Rosh Hashanah for the region’s Jewish community, with services and other events at two local congregations. (See our Sept. 2 news item.) And this fall’s DavidsonReads community reading program begins with a program Sunday at Town Hall on “Geneaology: A How-to Lesson.”

In sports, this weekend brings the annual River Run Country Club pro-am tennis tournament, a chance for tennis lovers to watch some good play. And Davidson College’s football team plays its league opener at home Saturday evening against Campbell.

Our calendar of events this week in and around Davidson includes music, theater, a Town Board meeting, public lectures and sporting events at Davidson College and the first Shalom Lake Norman Festival. And next weekend is Homecoming at Davidosn College.

Tobias Wolff, author of “Old School” and other books, lectures and signs books Tuesday night at Davidson College. Then on Wednesday award-winning journalist and commentator Robin Wright will speak on “Turmoil in Iran: What’s Next?” Both lectures are free.

New River Dramatists’ weeklong Davidson residency begins Thursday, includes a variety of public events. There’s a staged reading of a new play, “Absence” by Wendy Hammond,” on Saturday night that will raise funds for Davidson Community Players. And Sunday, Sept. 13, New River dramatists will stage an unusual dramatization called “Visions of the Future” in response to the Davidson Comprehensive Plan now under development with consultants and citizen committees.

The Shalom Lake Norman Festival is scheduled Sunday, Sept. 13, noon to 4 p.m., at Ramsey Creek Park, on Lake Norman, off West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. It’s the first festival of its kind in the area, coming just before the Jewish High Holidays. Organizers invite residents to come sample ethnic foods, dance and music, enjoy kids’ games and rides, and more.

On Saturday, there’s a free movie screening on the Village Green. And Sunday, it’s another downtown Davidson Concert on the Green, with the band Tropic Culture.

In sports, the Davidson College women’s field hockey team takes on North Carolina Tuesday night at Belk Turf Field. The women’s soccer team hosts UNC Charlotte Thursday. The men’s soccer team hosts the Adidas Classic Friday through Sunday. The football team opens its home season Saturday at Richardson Stadium against Lenoir-Rhyne. And the college hosts is annual Wildcat Classic this weekend.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 9, 8 p.m., Duke Family Performance Hall – Robin Wright, award-winning journalist and commentator, will speak on “Turmoil in Iran: What’s Next?” She will discuss recent developments in Iran, including this summer’s presidential election and its consequences. Ms. Wright has won awards including a MacArthur Foundation grant, the United Nations correspondents’ Gold Medal for coverage of international affairs, and the Weintal Prize for “the most distinguished diplomatic reporting.” In 1989, she earned the National Magazine Award for her coverage of Iran featured in The New Yorker. New River Dramatists’ weeklong Davidson residency began today (Thursday) includes a variety of public events, including a staged reading of a new play, “Absence” by Wendy Hammond,” on Saturday night to raise money for Davidson Community Players. And Sunday, Sept. 13, New River dramatists will stage an unusual dramatization called “Visions of the Future” in response to the Davidson Comprehensive Plan now under development with consultants and citizen committees.

In sports, the Davidson College women’s soccer team hosts UNC Charlotte tonight (Thursday), while the men’s soccer team hosts the Adidas Classic Friday through Sunday. The football team opens its home season Saturday at Richardson Stadium against Lenoir-Rhyne. And the college hosts is annual Wildcat Classic volleyball tournament this weekend, with teams from Canisius, Radford, UNC-Wilmington and Davidson.

Our calendar of events this week in and around Davidson includes music, theater, a Town Board meeting, public lectures and sporting events at Davidson College and the first Shalom Lake Norman Festival. And next weekend is Homecoming at Davidosn College.

Tobias Wolff, author of “Old School” and other books, lectures and signs books Tuesday night at Davidson College. Then on Wednesday award-winning journalist and commentator Robin Wright will speak on “Turmoil in Iran: What’s Next?” Both lectures are free.

New River Dramatists’ weeklong Davidson residency begins Thursday, includes a variety of public events. There’s a staged reading of a new play, “Absence” by Wendy Hammond,” on Saturday night that will raise funds for Davidson Community Players. And Sunday, Sept. 13, New River dramatists will stage an unusual dramatization called “Visions of the Future” in response to the Davidson Comprehensive Plan now under development with consultants and citizen committees.

The Shalom Lake Norman Festival is scheduled Sunday, Sept. 13, noon to 4 p.m., at Ramsey Creek Park, on Lake Norman, off West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. It’s the first festival of its kind in the area, coming just before the Jewish High Holidays. Organizers invite residents to come sample ethnic foods, dance and music, enjoy kids’ games and rides, and more.

On Saturday, there’s a free movie screening on the Village Green. And Sunday, it’s another downtown Davidson Concert on the Green, with the band Tropic Culture.

In sports, the Davidson College women’s field hockey team takes on North Carolina Tuesday night at Belk Turf Field. The women’s soccer team hosts UNC Charlotte Thursday. The men’s soccer team hosts the Adidas Classic Friday through Sunday. The football team opens its home season Saturday at Richardson Stadium against Lenoir-Rhyne. And the college hosts is annual Wildcat Classic this weekend.

DAVIDSON DASH SHUTTLE BUS – Mondays, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Town of Davidson has begun service on a weekly shuttle bus called Davidson Dash. The bus will visit downtown, South Main Street, Sadler Square and the Harris Teeter shopping center near Exit 30. Cost: $1 per roundtrip. Mr. Houck, class of 1987, has toured steadily for the past 20 years as the lead singer for regional favorites the Blue Dogs. Their music is layered with elements of Americana and employs pop sensibilities. Bobby and the band have released 10 albums, toured nationally with Hootie and the Blowfish, and continue to get solid radio play.

Mr. Edge, class of 2000, was a founding member and lead singer for Cast Iron Filter. For five years, Cast Iron Filter toured regionally in support of their five independent releases. With more than 50,000 records sold, CIF grabbed fans with an energetic blend of bluegrass and rock and roll. Dustin now lives in New York City where he plays shows around the city and is working on his second solo effort.

Bobby Houck will play from 8:00 to 9:30 and Dustin Edge will finish the show from 9:30 to 11.

Meanwhile, on Saturday night Rusty Knox and friends will entertain with a folky blend of country, rock, and bluegrass. That’s also from 8-11 p.m. Rusty’s group includes Brad Reddick, Class of ’91, and Mike Orlando , Class of 2000.

Carolina Captured, a fall photographic workshop, is scheduled Oct. 9-11 at Wildacres retreat, near Little Switzerland, in the N.C. mountains. Led by Charlotte-area experts including Gary Kerr of Fine Art Impressions in Davidson, and Kelly Culpepper and Tim Buchman of Charlotte, the workshop has become an annual gathering for photo enthusiasts from around the country.

Mr. Culpepper said this week a few spaces remain in the workshop, where mid-October color is spectacular across the Blue Ridge. Wildacres is an artist retreat near the highest elevations of the North Carolina mountains. Extraordinary vistas, waterfalls and a mountainside orchard are just some of the locations on the itinerary.
