Cornelius has an Earth Day celebration Thursday at  Smithville Park with games, music and arts & crafts. Also on Thursday, Jimmy Buffett is performing in Charlotte while on stage at Davidson College, performances of student-directed one-act plays continue. There’s an Earth Day concert in Davidson at the Birdsnest on Friday where ticket sales will go towards converting one of Davidson’s streetlights to solar power. The Davidson Farmer’s Market is open Saturday morning, and the weekend also brings egg hunts at venues such as Latta Plantation and Rural Hill as well as Easter services Sunday.

This weekend’s musical lineup at Summit Coffee in Davidson includes The Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards Duo, Chuck Johnson and Host Rob McHale on Thursday night, Davidson Local on Friday, and the Rick Spreitzer Trio on Saturday. At Friday night’s Davidson Local show, they’ll be passing the hat for Ernest Jeffries, the Davidson College dean and Gethsemane Baptist Church pastor whose home was destroyed in a fire two weeks ago.

Easter is coming this weekend, and there are plenty of things going on before we get there. The Lions Clubs of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville are coming together to sponsor a golf tournament Monday in honor of the late Russell B. Knox, former mayor and community leader. On Tuesday, Tyler Hicks, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist for the New York Times, will be visiting Davidson College to speak about his experiences in Libya. Davidson College will also be showcasing one act plays directed by students on Wednesday and Thursday. Saturday starts off the Easter weekend with Easter egg hunts leading into the Sunday services.

It’s going to be a busy weekend, full of fun events. Davidson Day School is welcoming top Maya archeologists and scholars today (Thursday) for the Maya at the Lago Conference that continues over the weekend. The Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Games comes back to Rural Hill for it’s 18th year and Festival in the Park presents the first annual Kings Drive Art Walk. There are three events focused on the environment this weekend: Charlotte Clean and Green Festival at CPCC, Viva Verde Earth Fest in Kannapolis and Wild Over Lake Norman at Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station. The U.S. National Whitewater Center is hosting musical guests, and there’s a rodeo at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte. On Saturday, Cornelius PARC hosts an egg hunt and Hop into Spring fest at Bailey Road Park.

This week is full of fun festivals, concerts and educational opportunities. Davidson Day School will be hosting the inaugural annual Maya at the Lago Conference this weekend, a gathering of more than 20 of the nation’s top Maya archeologists and scholars. The 18th annual Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games runs Friday through Sunday, with athletic competitions, music and dancing. There’s also a music festival at the U.S. National White Water Center and a rodeo in Charlotte this weekend. Davidson College is hosting a number of concerts and conferences. There’s a performance of Brahms’ Requiem on Monday, “A (musical) Trip Around the World” on Thursday and an oboe and piano concert on Friday. Tuesday is the Davidson Ben & Jerry’s free cone day. So, don’t forget to stop in and get some ice cream.

The weekend in and around Davidson brings a long list of community events, from Friday night’s Davidson Gallery Crawl to the opening of the Davidson Farmer’s Market’s regular season debut Saturday morning, to the Lake Norman YMCA Family Fun Day Saturday. The “Miles for Marnie” duathlon, 5k and kids’ fun run is Saturday morning, and Davidson College’s baseball team hosts UNC Greensboro. Writer Bonita Jones Knott gives a spoken word performance at Warehouse Performing Arts Center. And “Stuart Little” continues this weekend at Armour Street Theater. Meanwhile, Saturday is also Reptile Day at Davidson College.

This week, Davidson College students present majors they designed themselves, the Cornelius Board of Commissioners is meeting and there’s the Spring Fling Car Auction. Activist Eli Clare comes to Davidson College to read from his work and speak about social justice issues, such as disability, race and gender. The film “Waiting for Superman,” an exploration of public education in the U.S., will be playing at Community School of Davidson on Monday and Tuesday. On stage, William Inge’s play “Bus Stop” will be performed at Davidson College on Wednesday, while “Stuart Little” continues its run at Armour Street Theater this weekend. On Thursday, supporters of a Cornelius Veterans’ monument will hold a fund-raising Gala of Honor. And Davidson hosts its annual April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl on Friday.
