<p>On <strong>Monday, March 29</strong>, at 7 p.m., the <strong>Davidson Community Players</strong> will hold auditions at the Armour Street Theater, located at 307 Armour St., Davidson, for actors and actresses of all ages, shapes and sizes for its upcoming summer production of the riotous backstage farce <strong>&#8220;Noises Off.&#8221;</strong> Auditions will also be held <strong>Tuesday, March 30,</strong> at 7 p.m. For information about the Davidson Community Players, contact  Diane Benson at 704-892-7953 or visit <a href="http://www.davidsoncommunityplayers.org/" target="_blank">www.davidsoncommunityplayers.org</a>.</p>
<p>Also on <strong>Monday, March 29</strong>, a pair of meetings are planned at Cornelius Town Hall. At 5:30, Friends of the Library will hold a public meeting to discuss the future of the Cornelius library branch. Then at 7 p.m., the mayors of Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson will co-host a community meeting with Rhonda Lennon, District 1 representative to Charlotte Mecklenburg School board, to discuss the CMS budget and other issues facing the district. Both meetings are at <strong>Cornelius Town Hall</strong>,  21445 Catawba Ave. in downtown Cornelius.</p>
<p>Also Monday, <strong>Davidson Planning Board</strong> has its monthly meeting at Town Hall. Then Tuesday, the Town Board gathers for the second of two work sessions this month. <p>We have a pair of literary events. Writer <strong>Victoria Redel</strong> will answer questions following the screening of <strong>&#8220;Loverboy,</strong>&#8221; a film based on her novel and directed by Kevin Bacon on <strong>Tuesday, March 30</strong>, at 7:30 p.m. The Q&amp;A session will take place in the 900 Room of the Alvarez College Union and is free and open to the public. <p>Then on Thursday, April 1,  <strong>Charlotte Writers’ Club North </strong>will welcome author, poet and Johnson C. Smith University professor <strong>Donald Mager</strong> as its guest speaker. He&#8217;s Dean of the College of Arts &amp; Letters at JC Smith and has published more than 200 poems and translations from German, Czech and Russian. His latest work, Us Four Plus Four, is an anthology of translations from eight major Soviet-era Russian poets.  It is unique because it tracks almost a half century of their careers by simply placing the poems each wrote to the others in chronological order.  The Club meets at 7 pm on the first Thursday of each month at The Sanctuary of Davidson, 108 S. Main Street.</p>
<p>The YMCA partners with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas to help save lives with a <strong>community blood drive</strong>. Help us by giving blood the evening of <strong>Tuesday, March 30,</strong> 5:00 to 8:00 PM, and the morning of <strong>Wednesday, March 31,</strong> 9:30 to 11:30 AM. The Blood Drive will be at the Lake Norman YMCA, located at 21300 Davidson Street, Cornelius, NC.</p>
<p>The <strong>Davidson College Music Department</strong> and Davidson College&#8217;s co-ed acapella group <strong>Androgyny</strong> team up for the first time ever to bring you The <strong>April Fool&#8217;s Concert</strong> at 7:30pm in Tyler-Tallman Hall, Sloan Music Center, on <strong>April 1</strong>. One hundred percent of the proceeds from ticket sales for this <strong>benefit concert</strong> will go towards a fund allowing Androgyny to distribute its music to every student, faculty, and staff member of Davidson College, for free. Tickets available for $5 from the Union Ticket Office, 704.894.2135.</p>
<p>Join <strong>Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s</strong>, located at 202 S. Main St., Davidson, <strong>Friday, April 2</strong>, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. for the <strong>Give a pint, Get a pint Blood Drive</strong>. In cooperation with the <strong>American Red Cross</strong>, all blood donors get a free pint of ice cream. <p><strong>EASTER AND PASSOVER<br />

This week also brings both the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Christian celebration of Easter.  </p>
<p>The eight-day festival of Passover begins Monday, March 29, at sundown, as Jews celebrate the flight out of slavery in Egypt. Beth Shalom of Lake Norman has a Passover guide on its website, <a href="http://www.bslkn.org/" target="_blank">bslkn.org</a>.  A community seder is planned Tuesday by Lake Norman Jewish Congregation, <a href="http://www.lakenormanjc.org/" target="_blank">www.lakenormanjc.org/</a></p>
<p>Area Christians will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Sunday, April 4. </p>
<p>For its <strong>Easter Sunday service</strong>, <strong>River&#8217;s Edge Church</strong>, located at 412 Armour St. will host a performance at 10 a.m. by the Christian ballet company <strong>Paradosi of Seattle</strong>. Paradosi also will offer a dance workshop on <strong>Saturday, April 3</strong>, at Kingdom&#8217;s Feet Studio in Cornelius. More information: 980-475-1788.</p>
<p><strong>HOLY WEEK AT DAVIDSON COLLEGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH</strong>, Main Street and Concord Road &#8211; Maundy Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m., worship service with Communion at 6:30 p.m. in the Congregation House; Good Friday, April 2, noon, worship service in the DCPC sanctuary; Saturday, April 3, Easter Vigil, 7:30 p.m., worship service with Communion in the DCPC sanctuary; Easter Sunday, April 4, worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. The sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated at the 8:30 service.</p>

<p><strong>DAVIDSON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH</strong> &#8211; 233 S. Main St. &#8211;  Holy Thursday, April 1 &#8211; 7 p.m., led by the Compline Choir, childcare provided; Good Friday, April 2 &#8211; 7 p.m., Led by the Chancel Choir, childcare provided; Easter Sunday, April 4, 6 a.m.,  Sunrise Service in the chapel; also 8, 9:30, and 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Holy Communion will be served at the 6 and 8 a.m. services.</p>
<p><strong>LAKE FOREST CHURCH</strong> has four worship services at two locations this Easter Sunday, April 4. Services will be at the church home on Gilead Road in Huntersville at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m., with Lead Pastor Mike Moses. Pastor of Mission Michael Flake will lead a 10 a.m. service at Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St. in Davidson. </p>
<p><strong>UU FELLOWSHIP OF LAKE NORMAN</strong> &#8211; The local Unitarian Universalist group meets at Davidson College Tomlinson residence hall conference room Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Amy Hartman will lead the group&#8217;s first Flower Communion service, with spiritual nurturing, music, children&#8217;s story, talk and conversation. Doors will open at 10:30 am with the service starting at 11, followed by refreshments and conversation. People are asked to bring a flower of their choice, either from their own gardens, or from a field or roadside. </p>
<p><strong>SUNRISE SERVICE AT THE YMCA</strong> &#8211; The Lake Norman YMCA will host its 3rd annual Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 4. It begins at 7 a.m., overlooking the lake in the natural setting of the outdoor chapel. It is a non-denominational, spiritually-inclusive Easter service supported by the Lake Norman YMCA Christian Emphasis Committee. Led by Kyle Wallace, lead pastor of The Church of the Good Shepherd.  The Church of the Good Shepherd meets at  Lake Norman YMCA gymnasium each Sunday and will follow the Sunrise Service with their own Easter Service at 10 a.m., also led by Pastor Wallace.</p>
<p><strong>MOORESVILLE EASTER EGG HUNT</strong>, Saturday, April 3, 2 p.m. &#8211; Bellingham Park, Mooresville &#8211; Community Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by Mooresville Recreation Department. <p><strong>LATTA PLANTATION EASTER EGG HUNT</strong>, Saturday, April 3, 11 a.m., Latta Plantation historic site, Sample Road, Huntersville &#8211;   Children ages 1-10 can hunt for toy and candy filled eggs across the plantation.  Hunts will be at 11:00am (ages 1-3), 12:30pm (ages 4-6), and 2:00pm (ages 7-10). <p>It&#8217;s<strong> Charlotte Craft Beer Week</strong> and Brickhouse Tavern, 209 Delburg St., will be having a Redhook &#8220;Keep the Pint&#8221; night Monday from 5-8 p.m. They&#8217;ll have $3 pints, and you get to keep the glass. More about craft beer week at <a href="http://www.charlottecraftbeerweek.org/" target="_blank">www.charlottecraftbeerweek.org/</a></p>
<p><strong>Davidson Elementary</strong> will host its fifth annual <strong>Artfest</strong>, from 6 &#8211; 8:15 p.m. on <strong>Tuesday, March 23</strong>, transforming the school hallways into a public art gallery with an estimated 1,000 pieces of student artwork. The school&#8217;s recorder chorus will perform starting at 7 p.m. in the gym, and student created ceramic pots and gift baskets will be auctioned from 6 &#8211; 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event benefit the school’s PTA and its projects.</p>
<p>Tuesday is also Free Cone Day from noon to 8 p.m. at Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s, 202 S. Main St. Free ice cream will be offered all day. Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s will be raising funds for the <strong>North Mecklenburg Animal Rescue</strong> with on-site adoption options and puppies. North Mecklenburg Animal Rescue is a nonprofit, all-breed animal rescue group whose goal is to end pet overpopulation, abandonment, and neglect.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t forget, Davidson Public Library invites you the <strong>first  and third Mondays of each month</strong> for a 25-35 minute storytime that  consists of books, flannel board stories, finger games and musical  activities geared toward an audience of 3-5 year olds. <strong>Preschool  Storytime</strong> takes place at 10:15 a.m.</p>
<p>At 2 p.m. Monday, Davidson planners will host a <strong>public planning workshop </strong>for a renovation that would create a new <strong>nature-focused pre-school </strong>on Mayes Road. <p><strong>Ed Williams</strong>, former editorial page editor at The Charlotte Observer and the current Batten Professor of Public Policy at Davidson, will present &#8220;<strong>Losing the News: How the communications revolution is good &#8211; and bad &#8211; for America</strong>.&#8221;  The lecture is <strong>Monday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m.</strong> in the Semans Lecture Hall of the Davidson College Visual Arts Center, at Main and Griffith streets, is free and open to the public. <p><strong>The Davidson Community Players</strong> will hold auditions for actors and actresses of all ages, shapes and sizes for its upcoming summer production of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical <strong>Oklahoma!</strong>.  Auditions takes place <strong>Monday, March 15</strong> and <strong>Tuesday, March 15</strong> at 7 p.m. at the Armour Street Theater located at 307 Armour St., Davidson. <p>Other events at the college this week include a Saturday lecture by <strong>Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers</strong> and a discussion Tuesday titled &#8220;Is Religious Belief Immoral?&#8221; with a college philosopher and a religion/ethics professor. Mr. Rogers speaks Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall as part of this year&#8217;s Bank of America lecture series.  On Tuesday, March 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the Alvarez College Union 900 Room,  Associate Professor of Philosophy <strong>Paul Studtmann</strong> and <strong>Doug Ottati</strong>, Craig Family Distinguished Professor of Religion and Ethics, will lead the discussion on religious belief. </p>

<p>Tuesday night brings another Organ at Davidson concert at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. <p>Join Davidson College biologist <strong>Pat Peroni</strong> for a <strong>Tour of the Kincaid Greenway Trail</strong> on Wednesday, March 17, at 9 a.m.   Dr. Peroni will guide participants in a walking tour of the vegetation and wildlife along the Kincaid Trail. Meet at the trailhead parking area just off South Street in Davidson between Davidson Elementary School and the Antiquity Cornelius neighborhood.</p>
<p>Also Wednesday, the Davidson Town Board holds a budget planning retreat all day at Davidson Village Inn. The meeting will include discussion of potential &#8220;personnel implications&#8221; of next year&#8217;s town budget. <p>Performances continue this week of Davidson Community Players&#8217; production of &#8220;<strong>Violet</strong>,&#8221; a contemporary musical by <strong>Brian Crawley and Jeanine Tesori</strong>. Set in 1964 in the Deep South of the Civil Rights Era, it is based on <strong>&#8220;The Ugliest Pilgrim,&#8221;</strong> a short story by <strong>Doris Betts</strong> of Statesville. <p>The <strong>Davidson Farmers Market</strong> holds its tailgate market with local farmers and vendors selling meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items. <p>At Davidson United Methodist Church tonight at 7 p.m., Ms. Carter will give a first-hand account of the quake, the situation in Port-au-Prince now, and suggestions for helping Haiti.  Refreshments will follow and for more information, contact Rev. Jeff Hassel at 704-892-8277.</p>
<p>On <strong>Tuesday, February 23</strong>, join the <strong>Charlotte Teachers Institute</strong> for their presentation for teachers, Davidson College and UNCC professors lead the following discussion topics: How Disease Shaped the Americas, HIV and Unexpected Immunities, Cultural Stereotypes and Pandemics, Perceptions of Disease and Disability and Effects and Diagnosis of Re-Disease in the Classroom. The program starts at <strong>5:30 p.m.</strong> at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, 420 S. Tryon St., Charlotte.</p>
<p>Also, Tuesday, the<strong> Soweto Gospel Choir</strong> sings at Davidson College&#8217;s Duke Family Performance Hall as part of the Artist Series.</p>
<p>And Tuesday at 7, Davidson Day School&#8217;s boys&#8217; basketball team hosts Lawrence Academy of Merry Hill, N.C., in a NCISAA 1A state tournament Game. Davidson Day&#8217;s Patriots are ranked No. 7 in the NCISAA division 1A.  The game at the Davidson Day gym off Griffith Street is open to the public.  Tickets are $7 per adult, $5 per student, children 8 and under free.</p>
<p>The <strong>Davidson men&#8217;s basketball team</strong> takes the court <strong>Wednesday at 7 p.m.</strong> at Belk Arena. Come cheer on the Cats as they take on UNC-Greensboro on <strong>Senior Night</strong>, the last home game for the Class of 2010 players. (The men are on the road Monday, at Chattanooga.)</p>
<p>A long-anticipated lecture at Davidson College Thursday features <strong>Margaret Atwood</strong>, the Booker Prize-winning author of &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8221; and &#8220;The Blind Assassin&#8221; and this year&#8217;s Annual Conarroe Lecturer. It begins at 8 p.m</strong> at Duke Family Performance Hall of the Alvarez Student Union. The event is sold out, but there will be a simulcast of the lecture in the union 900 Room. No ticket is required for the simulcast.</p>
<p>The Cornelius Arts Center, 19725 Oak St., invites you to a reception for artist <strong>Gordon C. James</strong> on <strong>Friday, February 26</strong>. The reception runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Mr. James&#8217; paintings are on display this month in the center gallery.</p>
<p><strong>Davidson Community Players</strong> will host an audition workshop for actors (ages 14 and up) from 11:30 am – 2 pm on <strong>Saturday, Feb. 27,</strong> at the Armour Street Theatre. This <strong>free workshop</strong>, supported by an N.C. Arts Council grant, will feature local talents from the upcoming production of <em>Violet,</em> including local actor/director Dennis Delamar, musical director John Smith, director Melissa Ohlman-Roberge, and choreographer Felicia Davis.</p>

And the college theater department brings <strong>&#8220;Nine Parts of Desire&#8221;</strong> to the stage.</p>
<p>And Saturday is the rescheduled <strong>Davidson Cares</strong> worship service and community service project to help earthquake victims in Haiti.</p>

<p>On Monday night, the college hosts an interdisciplinary panel discussion about <strong>Margaret Atwood&#8217;s &#8220;The Year of the Flood.&#8221;</strong> The panel, moderated by Annie Ingram, Professor of English and Thomson Professor of Environmental Studies,<strong> begins at 7:30 p.m.</strong> in the Lilly Family Gallery of Chambers. This event is a prelude to <strong>Ms. Atwood</strong>&#8216;s visit to Davidson next Thursday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m., when she will deliver the annual Joel A. <p>The music calendar this week includes many highlights. On Tuesday, a pair of free concerts is on tap. A <strong>chamber music trio of </strong>cellist<strong> Alan Black,</strong> pianist <strong>Ruskin Cooper </strong>and contralto <strong>Diane Thornton </strong>will play works by Brahms and Vaughan Williams and  &#8220;Crossing Rivers IV,&#8221; by Davidson music professor <strong>Jennifer Stasack</strong>, text by poet and Davidson English professor <strong>Alan Michael Parker</strong>. That&#8217;s 7:30 at the college&#8217;s Tyler-Tallman Hall. Also Tuesday night at 7:30, at Davidson College Presbyterian Church,  the Organ at Davidson series presents <strong>Michael Rowland,</strong> accompanist at Davidson College and Associate Director of Music at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, in a program ranging four centuries from Buxtehude, Saint-Saens, Jongen, Brahms and Pinkham to Petr Eben.</p>
<p>On Thursday, <strong>Davidson College Symphony Orchestra</strong> performs the next in its series of <strong>&#8220;Concerts for a Cause</strong>,&#8221; a program titled &#8220;VH1 Save the Music.&#8221; The program, at  7:30 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall, will feature Artist Associate in Voice<strong> Jacque Culpepper</strong> and will include works by Barber, Copland, Glass, and the &#8220;girl Gershwin.&#8221; Free, but donations accepted for VH1 Save the Music Foundation, which works to preserve instrumental music instruction in public schools.</p>

<p>Ragtime pianist <strong>Ethan Uslan </strong>of Charlotte will be in town Saturday for a rescheduled appearance to provide accompaniment to the<strong> silent film &#8220;The General.&#8221;</strong> That&#8217;s at  7 p.m. at St. Alban&#8217;s Episcopal Church. (Read our preview,<a href="http://davidsonnews.net/guide/2010/01/28/silent-film-the-general-with-a-ragtime-soundtrack/" target="_blank"> &#8220;Silent film &#8216;The General&#8217; with a ragtime soundtrack.&#8221;</a>) And don&#8217;t forget the live music at Summit Coffee and the Brickhouse Thursday to Saturday nights. On Saturday, <strong>Davidson Local</strong>, a group that plays original songs about local life by guitarist and Davidson College Prof.<strong> John Wertheimer,</strong> plays a rescheduled fund-raising concert for the family of <strong>Jorge Fiscal Cruz,</strong> the Mexican-born restaurant worker and Davidson resident <a href="../../2009/12/04/when-the-american-dream-comes-to-an-end/" target="_blank">who died after a November bicycle accident</a>. He will discuss how his historical research helped to secure posthumous pardons for Thomas and Meeks Griffin, two African American South Carolinians who were wrongly convicted of murder nearly a century ago.</p>

<p>The Davidson College<strong> men&#8217;s basketball team</strong> hosts Wofford at the Belk Arena, Wednesday, Feb. 17. Then on Saturday, both the men and women are home. The men host Furman at 2 p.m. and the women play College of Charleston at 7 p.m.</p>
<p>Davidson College&#8217;s <strong>Gamut Dance Company</strong> presents its annual show in the Duke Family Performance Hall Friday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for students and $9 for general admission.</p>
<p><strong>The Davidson Farmers Market</strong> holds another winter tailgate market Saturday, Feb 20, at 9:00 a.m. downtown next to Town Hall.  Tailgate market bring local farmers and vendors selling meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items every other Saturday this winter. <p>Also Saturday, the snowed out<strong> &#8220;Davidson Cares&#8221;</strong> project will bring community volunteers together for worship and community service. The day begins with a community worship service at 10 a.m. at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Then from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will help package 30,000 bags of food in cooperation with Stop Hunger Now. Events include a talk by breast-cancer survivor and Bosom Buddies founder Lauren Perny Pragoff, Davidson class of 2003. Also, dinner, raffle, musical performances and silent and live auctions. Bosom Buddies supports Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test, a Greensboro-based organization whose sole purpose is to find a new method for earlier pre-tumor detection of breast cancer. <p>Davidson&#8217;s Asian Cultural Awareness Association sponsors the annual <strong>Lunar New Year celebration</strong> Sunday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Alvarez Union, marking the arrival of the Year of the Tiger. Food, music and dance performances, including a Lion Dance, will run until around 9 p.m., when the party will adjourn to Chambers lawn for the annual fireworks display. <p>And Friday brings a pair of fun fund-raisers: the <strong>2010 Green Ball,</strong> a contra-dance and fund-raiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy, and the 4th annual <strong>Apocalypse Greek Step Show</strong>, a showcase of step dancing that will raise money for Davidson-Cornelius Day Care and the American Diabetes Association.<span id="more-3083"></span></p>
<p>Tuesday&#8217;s Town Board meeting includes a vote on a series of budget amendments, presentations and votes on the Lake Norman Regional Bicycle Plan and Carolina Thread Trail, approve minor amendments to the master plan for parcel N of the Little Gate development, off Jetton Street, to consider a contract with the town&#8217;s Washington lobbyist, and to consider approving a master lease for offices in South Main Square Business Center as part of the town&#8217;s participation in the PIES business incubator project.</p>
<p>Also this week, the college&#8217;s series of events &#8220;Voices of Middle Eastern Women: Women’s Lives in Arts and Culture&#8221; continues with <strong>&#8220;Experiences and Observations: Professors Engage in an Open Discussion on Women in the Middle East</strong>.&#8221; That&#8217;s Thursday, Feb. 11, and is part of the lead-up to the Davidson theater department production &#8220;Nine Parts of Desire&#8221; later this month.</p>
