Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson has an interesting weekend of music ahead, beginning Thursday with the next in its series of Songwriter in the Round showcases. Billy Jones and the Pocket are up Friday and jazz guitarist Dennis Currier and his trio are on tap Saturday. Read the full story

The Davidson Generals are among three a cappella groups performing at Saturday's benefit.
A Davidson College student group called The Buddy System that helps kids with special needs will host a concert by three campus a cappella groups on Saturday to help raise money for and awareness of children with special needs.
The Generals, The Delilahs, and Androgyny will sing at the event on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m., at the college’s Duke Family Performance Hall.

Our community calendar this week is packed with fund-raisers, dramatic productions, meetings, lectures, seminars, and other events. Dr. James Zogby, president of the Arab-American Institute on Monday will talk about his new book “Arab Voices: What Are they saying to Us and Why It matters.” On Tuesday, Scott Bosley, this year’s James K. Batten Professor of Public Policy at Davidson, will give the annual Batten Lecture, on the topic “Democracy and the Democratization of News-A Question Hangs in the Ether: Will Both be Well-Served?”
On stage, Davidson College theater department’s production of Brecht’s “Galileo” debuts on Wednesday, while Davidson Community Players’ “Once on This Island” continues at the weekend. Davidson College’s Sigma Phi Epsilon hosts a 5K fund-raising Turkey Trot 5K fun run/walk on the Village Green Saturday morning to aid the Free Clinic of Our Towns. And there’s an a cappella concert Saturday night as a fund-raiser for children with special needs. On Sunday, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will honor town officials and promote interfaith understanding.

The Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. brings us “Once on This Island, Jr.,” a bright one-act musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, also the creators of Broadway’s “Ragtime” and “Seussical.” Nominated for eight Tony Awards, this colorful Caribbean folktale carries lessons of social prejudice, love, and fate—and surprisingly, of reality.

Veterans Day will keep kids out of school Thursday, when you’ll also find the town of Davidson’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on the Village Green at 11 a.m. On stage: Davidson Community Players debut their youth musical “Once on This Island Jr.,” a sort of Caribbean “Little Mermaid.” And Davidson College presents an evening of opera scenes Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, it’s Homecoming Weekend at Davidson College, including Saturday’s football game vs. San Diego. Saturday and Sunday also bring the 15th annual Rural Hill Sheep Dog Trials, one of this area’s most unique autumn traditions.
Don’t forget: Davidson Farmer’s Market has shifted to its winter schedule, which means no market this Saturday. At Our Town Cinemas this weekend: “Morning Glory,” “Hereafter,” “Due Date” and “Megamind.” (Note: Harry Potter arrives next week – the Nov. 18 midnight show is sold out.)
