The quirks and craziness of contemporary life are the fodder for theatrical fun in “Life As We Know It,” a 90-minute show of five short comedies and a monologue written by North Carolina playwright Elaine Alexander.  The show takes a satiric swipe at cell phone addiction, helicopter parenting and youth obsession among other modern day maladies.

• Runs April 24 to May 4, Thursdays to Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm.

The exhibit traces Van Gogh’s work from his early career through his masterpieces.

CHARLOTTE–From Milan and Moscow, to Istanbul and Budapest, the globally-acclaimed exhibition “Van Gogh Alive” now comes to the United States east coast for the first time when it debuts at Discovery Place on April 25.

“Van Gogh Alive” is the synthesis of traditional art and modern technology. More than 3,000 images, including Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works are taken outside of the frame and brought to life in a whirlwind of vibrant colors and vivid details. For the first time, guests can walk through images of famous works, such as “The Starry Night,” “Sunflowers,” “The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum,” “The Yellow House,” “Bedroom in Arles” and many more.

Davidson-based classical public radio station WDAV-FM will host a Young Chamber Musicians Competition this spring, giving young chamber music ensembles from around the country a chance to compete for cash during a concert in September in Davidson.

Musicians are invited to submit videos of a performance. They’ll be judged and two finalists in each age group will be selected to face off in a judged performance in September at Davidson College’s Tyler-Tallman Hall. Winners will get a share of $4,500 in prizes. Read the full story

It’s April in Davidson and that means April Is for Arts. The annual celebration gets into full swing Friday night with the April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl.
