This second week of July offers events that will get you outside — though not necessarily in the heat of the day. Cornelius offers “Dolphin Tale” on Wednesday night as part of its outdoor movies series, while on Friday night the bands “Heartbeat” and “Rare Form” perform in Mooresville in the latest free open-air rock shows. On Saturday, Latta Plantation is hosting a living history day, where you can take tour sand see back-country life skills demonstrations. End up your weekend outdoors with a concert on the Davidson green featuring “The Backbeat” Beatles tribute.   If you prefer to stay indoors, however, there’s still plenty to do. Library summer programs are in full swing, blood drives will be held at area Ben & Jerry’s and at Birkdale Village, and various public boards and commissions will be meeting  — including the Cornelius Planning Board, the Lake Norman Marine Commission  and the Cornelius PARC Commission. And don’t forget a siren test by the Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Shaggie Maggie plays Sunday on the Davidson Green.

The last weekend of June in the Lake Norman area includes two “Celebrate America” outdoor symphony concerts that wind up with fireworks – in Kannapolis Friday and Bailey Park Cornelius on Saturday. A pair of theatrical productions can be seen on local stages: “Garden Party: The Adventures of Adam & Eve” at Warehouse PAC in Cornelius, a new comedy combining writings of Mark Twain, George Bernard Shaw, John Milton and nursery rhymes, and Davidson Community Players’ “Crazy for You” at Davidson College, a musical comedy by George and Ira Gershwin. Listen to live local music at Campania Cafe and Summit Coffee. There’s sailing, music and fireworks over the water Saturday and Sunday during the Independence Day Regatta at the Lake Norman Yacht Club. And the next Davidson Concert on the Green is coming up Sunday, as part of the town’s Independence Day celebration. It begins with a a small-town parade from McEver Fields to the Green, then the sounds of the variety band Shaggie Maggie.

Charlotte Symphony returns to Bailey Road park this Saturday for an Independence Day concert and fireworks.

The Cornelius Outdoor Cinema Series continues Thursday night with a screening of “Jack and Jill” at Kenton Place. Summer programs are in full swing with story times for kids at Davidson and Cornelius libraries, and magician “Fish the Magish” appearing Tuesday at Davidson library. It’s a good week for theater: The musical comedy “Crazy for You”continues at Davidson College, while the comic play “Garden Party” opens at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. If these shows have you yearning to do a little acting yourself, auditions for this fall’s Carolina Renaissance Festival are Wednesday and Saturday at Ballantyne Arts Center in Charlotte. On Saturday, Davidson Farmer’s Market has a Beers & Brats Brunch, and the Sizzling Summer Craft-actular craft show comes to Sadler Square Shopping Center in Davidson. At week’s end, Fourth of July celebrations begin. There’s an Independence Day Regatta  Saturday and Sunday at Lake Norman Yacht Club in Mooresville. The Cornelius Concerts in the Park has the Charlotte Symphony and fireworks at Bailey Road Park Saturday. Then on Sunday, you can dress up and march in Davidson’s small-town parade to the Green, where Shaggie Maggie plays a Concert on the Green.

You’ll have four chances this weekend to see Davidson Community Players’ “Crazy for You,” the award-winning musical comedy by George and Ira Gershwin that opens Thursday night at Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall. Head over to Kannapolis on Friday for Movies in the Park with “How to Train Your Dragon.” On Saturday morning, enjoy local fare at the Davidson Farmer’s Market and go on World of Wonder’s tree walk outing. Summit Coffee presents live music all weekend long; or for music of a different flavor, the First Baptist Church in Huntersville is hosting a youth choir singing traditional hymns.  And don’t forget to check out the showtimes at right for Our Town Cinemas in Davidson, where “Brave” opens this weekend.

Head out Monday to the River Run Golf Club in Davidson for the Curry Celebrity Golf Classic. You’ll be able to see sports stars such Muggsy Bogues, Dale Jarrett, Muhsin Muhammad — and of course Dell and Stephen Curry. Other outside events this week include the Advanced Civil War camp at Latta Plantation and a tree walk in Davidson. Several government meetings are on the agenda this week. There’s a public hearing Monday on the Cornelius budget, a meeting of the Davidson Design Review Board on Wednesday and a meeting of the Cornelius Architectural Review Board on Friday. Musical comedy “Crazy for You” opens Thursday and runs through Sunday this week, and Summit Coffee hosts its Summit Songwriters Showcase on Thursday. Watch for road work on I-77 – actually over I-77. Preservation work begins Monday on 15 bridges, including four crossings in Huntersville.

Saturday night at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius Outdoor Cinema Series

Run through the streets and greenways of Davidson this weekend during the Summit Solstice 4-Mile Race, a benefit for Our Towns Habitat for Humanity. Then kick back with a post-race music festival featuring rock-bluegrass band Cast Iron Filter and beers from New Belgium Brewery. Or you can run through the mud Saturday in the Charity Chase mud run at Abersham park, which benefits military members and their families. For a slower pace, head to the Latta Plantation to see how life was in another time. See open-hearth cooking in the kitchen in the circa-1800 house. Music’s available all weekend,  from Deuces Wild at Summit Coffee on Thursday to the Tribute Band Rock Night at the Kannapolis Summer Series on Saturday to the Lake Norman Big Band concert on Sunday night on the Davidson Village Green. If it doesn’t rain, outdoor movies are another option, with this week’s installment of the Cornelius  Summer outdoor cinema series “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”
