It’s a week for cerebral and community-oriented pursuits in Davidson and the surrounding area, with lectures, discussions, concerts, fundraisers and the annual cleanup of Lake Norman and its shoreline.

The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra will hold the first “course” in its “Musical Meal” series of performances on Tuesday night at the Duke Family Performance Hall, while the famed Second City comedy troupe will perform at the Duke Family Performance Hall on Friday night.

The Davidson Farmer’s Market will open Saturday morning, with farmers and producers offering a variety of locally-grown and raised fruits, vegetables, baked goods, meats, flowers, herbs, plants and more. Read the full story

‘Shake’ things up a bit this weekend and see a new twist on a revered Shakespeare classic, Macbeth, opening Friday. And starting Thursday, spend some time downtown to support  local shops’ fundraisers for Hope in Uganda and Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.  Cap off the weekend with some classical music and even a little football – all happening in Davidson and the surrounding area. What will YOU do this weekend?

The Connie Company — the Davidson Community Players’ youth program — offers its own twist on Macbeth, Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, in five performances over three days beginning Friday night at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.

For a different sort of performance, check out the Hough High Huskies, who Friday night host their rivals, the Hopewell Titans from nearby Huntersville, and the Davidson College Wildcats, who on Saturday host Johnson C. Smith at Richardson Stadium.

Before heading to the theater or the games, head downtown Thursday night – several shops in downtown Davidson will remain open late for Downtown Davidson Ladies Night. La De Daa’s, Monkee’s on Main and the Village Store all will host special events to benefit Acres of Hope in Uganda.

On Saturday morning, grab the kids and head over to Our Town Cinemas in Davidson, which will show “Field of Dreams” and “Ratatouille” beginning at 10 a.m. to raise funds for Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.

And unwind Sunday with a classical music treat. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson will host BachFest IV, featuring concertos by Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli, while Davidson College will hold a concert of Indian music by the ensemble “Vibrations.”

Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green and Green Day Festival will be Saturday morning in downtown Davidson. Are you running? Meanwhile, have you seen Davidson Community Players’ production of “The Guys” yet? Anne Nelson’s play about healing after 9/11 in New York City concludes its run this weekend at Armour Street Theatre.

Feeling more like catching some good local music? Davidson’s Summit Coffee will hold its Songwriters Showcase Thursday night, while the Mooresville law firm of Homesley and Wingo will host the Blues and Burritos benefit Saturday evening. Also Saturday, Davidson Local plays a benefit for DavidsonNews.net and CorneliusNews.net at Summit. Public meetings, fund-raisers and author visits at Davidson College are on the calendar in the area this week. On Saturday, the Davidson Lands Conservancy hosts the Green Day festival and its annual the Run for Green half-marathon, 10K and 5K runs. Know Your Farms has its annual farm tour this weekend. The Lake Norman Beer Festival is Saturday at Galway Hooker in Cornelius, and Mooresville’s HealthReach Community Clinic raises money Saturday at the Blues & Burritos benefit.

Neil White, author of the memoir “In the Sanctuary of Outcasts,” will give a reading Tuesday morning at Davidson College, while MIT’s Ethan Zuckerman lectures Tuesday night at the college on “Does the Internet Change the Way We Connect?” The Lake Norman Marine Commission and Cornelius Planning Board both meet Monday, the Davidson Town Board meets Tuesday night, and the Lake Norman Transportation Commission convenes Wednesday night in Mooresville. The weekend’s nearly here, folks – time to start thinking about recharging the ol’ batteries.

On Thursday, there’s something for the fashion-minded — Fashion’s Night Out at the Metropolitan in Charlotte — and for those who tend more towards the outdoors — a lecture by fishing guide and author Capt. Gus Gustafson on “The Sights and Sounds of Lake Norman.”

Well, it’s a new week, and there’s good news and bad. The bad: Most of us have to get back to work, or ship the kids off to school. The good: Most of us enjoyed a nice three-day weekend because of the Labor Day holiday, and the coming week has plenty to keep you occupied and energized.
