The Davidson and Cornelius Libraries begin their summer educational initiatives this week starting with “A Walk in the Woods,” an educational performance and interactive program, at the Cornelius Library. Tomorrow, the Davidson Library hosts Dig Into Reading! for elementary school-aged children at 10:30am and Paws to Read, a reading skills initiative with therapy dogs, at 11am. Both of these events will occur every week this summer. Also on Tuesday, Char-Grill Davidson will be hosting the 3rd Annual “12 Hours of Burgers for 24 Hours of Booty.” 10% of all sales will be donated to Team Camden for 24 Hours of Booty in support of cancer research.

Chris Cook performs this Saturday at Carrburritos

Enjoy the Davidson and Lake Norman region this weekend with a variety of live music opportunities, educational opportunities, and social gatherings.  If you’d like to head outdoors, two guided hikes are taking place, one for adults and the other for families with children. The Davidson Lands Conservancy offers a free guided tour of the backcountry Lake Norman State Park at 9am Saturday, led by naturalist Sharon Becker. For children, World of Wonder is hosting an exploratory creek walk for families with children 4 and up, focusing on what lives in our area’s creeks and streams.

Saturday evening, the Carrburritos Summer Concert Series kicks off with performer Chris Cook. Cook takes the stage at 9pm, and 10% of all proceeds from this show and others in the Summer Series will benefit the Ada Jenkins Music Program. Davidson Concerts on the Green continues Sunday, featuring party rock band Pushh at 6pm. Bring a chair and blanket and enjoy free music in your community.

On Thursday, the rescheduled Tarte Field dedication will take place at the Westmoreland Athletic Complex.

Events across the Lake Norman region this week range from town board meetings to dance lessons to fundraisers to live music. The Beautiful World of Watercolor Exhibit continues in the Davidson Town Hall every weekday during business hours, featuring artist Jim Kerr and his students. The Cornelius Planning Board will meet Monday night at 6:30pm in the Cornelius Town Hall to discuss Phase 2B of the Antiquity Development. Also on Monday, Summit Trivia Night continues at Summit Coffee starting at 7:30pm. Craft coffee and beer available for purchase. Starting this Tuesday, two seven-week sets of shag dance lessons will be offered in Mooresville by Twister’s Shag Club, a non-profit social group for singles and couples age 21 and over.

Band of Oz plays a Davidson Concert on the Green Sunday.

Hot rods and specialty cars will be on display at two auto shows in the Lake Norman area this weekend. On Saturday, Davidson Farmer’s Market will have a “Breakfast of Champions” food fundraiser, featuring meals prepared by local chefs. And Saturday night, don’t forget Summit Coffee’s Summit Solstice 4-mile race and festival, a fundraiser to help fight malaria in Africa. The Davidson Green School will be holding an information session on Tuesday, June 4th at 5:30pm at the Davidson Public Library. Stop by to learn about an innovative new approach to education in our community. Also on Tuesday, enjoy some wine while you practice painting at the Lake Norman Cottage starting at 6:30pm. For more information call the Lake Norman Wine Cottage; cost is $45 a person.

On Wednesday, Davidson College Presbyterian Church’s (DCPC) and Davidson United Methodist Church’s (DUMC) career support programs will merge to create “The Davidson Career Transition Program,” a jointly sponsored program of both churches. It will meet from 10am – 12pm, twice a month in room 216 of DUMC’s educational building. On Thursday, Woodlawn School seniors and their families will celebrate their graduation at the 2013 commencement ceremonies, held on the Woodlawn Campus starting at 9am.  Read the full story
