If you listen to Charlotte public radio station WFAE in the mornings, you may have noticed this: Marshall Terry has taken over as the station’s permanent local host during NPR’s “Morning Edition,” from 5 to 9am. Terry has worked at the station for 7 years, and has risen from intern to producer to the morning hosting job.

He replaced Kevin Kniested, whom the station said has returned to Washington State.

“It’s been a pleasure to watch Marshall grow into this position. He’s never hesitated to do whatever is asked of him whether he’s hosting or writing copy for another host to read,” WFAE news director Greg Collard said in announcing the change. “Marshall has done so much at WFAE – it’s exciting to promote from within and have someone who has truly earned the job as host of WFAE’s ‘Morning Edition.’”

Seven years ago, Terry came to WFAE 90.7fm as an intern in the News Department. That turned into a full-time associate producer’s position helping with the local production of Morning Edition and substituting for then-host Scott Graf. Most recently, Terry has been anchoring midday newscasts and serving as a substitute host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

PUBLIC CONVERSATION: EDUCATION

WFAE’s next “Public Conversation” on Sept. 16 will look at the changing climate for education in the Charlotte region.

In 2014, K-12 education is much more than reading, writing and arithmetic. There are choices between public, private and charter schools. In addition to report cards, there’s end-of-grade testing, which some say leads to “teaching to the test” instead of creative learning. Finally, what’s the best way to pay teachers and keep them in the classroom?

“The State of Public Education” is Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m., at UNC Charlotte Center City. 320 E 9th St., Charlotte.

Moderated by WFAE’s Tom Bullock, the conversation will address recent moves to raise teacher pay; discuss the future of student achievement standards and Common Core guidelines; charter schools; and what parents, teachers and school administrators want and expect from local public schools.
