With the Chiquita Classic at River Run still in town and the Yiasou Greek Festival down the road in Charlotte, the first weekend in September is shaping up to be a great one! In addition to these two popular events, we have three farmer’s markets, a Potter’s Market at the Mint Museum, Seussical Jr. auditions, an Art Festival at Plaza Midwood, an improv show at The Warehouse in Cornelius and a Davidson College football game. The Rumor Mill in Davidson will hold an open house in honor of their one-year anniversary, and “Simplified” will perform at The Chiquita Classic on Saturday. We have an assortment of music venues for you this weekend including a performance by singer, storyteller and folk-theologian, Ed Kilbourne at Mt. Zion Church in Cornelius. Read on for details and several more events.
Mothers of multiples, if you’re looking to fill your children’s closets with gently-loved items, you will want to be at Brawley Middle School on Saturday morning for the 2014 fall/winter consignment sale. Take advantage of the remaining warm weather and stop by the Davidson, Mooresville or Huntersville farmer’s markets that will run from 8am-12pm on Saturday.
Over at River Run in Davidson, the Chiquita Classic continues on Saturday with a junior clinic at 3pm, and at 7pm Davidson’s Concerts on the Green presents “Simplified.” On Sunday, the final round of the Chiquita Classic will take place. Please take note: On both days of the tourney, gates will open at 8am.
At the Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend The Bridgestone Teens Drive Smart Driving Experience will take place both Saturday and Sunday. This half-day program will aid and help equip teens with the skills they need to handle the challenges on today’s roadways.
At the Armour Street Theater, auditions for Seussical Jr. will take place for aspiring actors between the ages of 8 and 20.
The Rumor Mill in Davidson will kick off its 1-year anniversary with an all-day celebration starting at 10am. Enjoy a free lunch for visitors beginning at 12pm and live music all day and evening, including a 7pm performance by Davidson-based band “Sunday Union.”
Let’s head down the road into Charlotte for these next fantastic events. The Mint Museum will host its rich-in-tradition, 10th annual Potter’s Market. Here collectors will have access to the latest works from potters across North Carolina and surrounding areas.
The Yiasou Greek Festival, a Charlotte favorite, kicks off Friday night and runs through Sunday. This highly-popular, family-friendly event offers Hellenic cultural exhibits, authentic Greek cuisine and pastries, entertainment, art, shopping and more.
On Commonwealth Avenue in the Plaza Midwood section of the city, you can enjoy a free festival in the streets of this transitional and culturally rich area that will be full of local art, handcrafted goods, craft beer and well-known bands such as “Ghost Tent Revival” and “Big Daddy.”
After you’ve wrapped up your afternoon down south, head back to the Lake to cheer for your Davidson Wildcats as they take on Catawba College. Fans are encouraged to wear black to the game to “Black out Richardson Stadium!”
We can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday night then in a room full of people boisterously belly-laughing to the comedy of The Improv Vikings at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center. They will team up with newly-emerging Lake Norman-based “Reaction Troupe” for a night of laughs and unpredictable comedy.
Also on Saturday night Studio-C Cinema will present the film, “The Great Beauty” at 7pm at the Cornelius Arts Center.
As always, we have the best selection of music in the Lake Norman area for you to enjoy. Watch the sunset as music fills the air at The Melanie Williams Amphitheater at Queens Landing from 5-9pm.
Enjoy the wit and observation of Fountain Penn, a Summit well-loved regular. This young man with an “old soul” will leave you impressed to say the least. Woody will be at Bacchus Wine & Tapas from 7-9pm, and at the Rusty Rudder, Scott and Woody will perform early and Pushh will perform late-night. Wally and Dave will be at the Corkscrew in Birkdale Village from 8-11pm, and at the Galway Hooker, Jay Mathey and John Linker will perform.
Get your endorphines pumping Sunday morning with a sprint triathlon at Ingersoll-Rand’s Davidson campus. On Sunday The North Mecklenburg Animal Hospital will host its “Dunk-a-Doctor” open house. Their doctors and staff will be on hand to give tours of the newly-renovated and expanded hospital. Enjoy food and beverages, goodie baskets and a shot at dunking one of their vets.
At Mt. Zion Church in Cornelius at 6pm join Ed Kilbourne, singer/storyteller/folk-theologian, for a performance featuring his collections of moving music, quirky humor and insightful monologues. Ed has earned a remarkable reputation as one of America’s cutting-edge religious communicators.
The Mint Museum’s Potter’s Market, The Yiasou Greek Festival, The Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Teens Smart Driving Experience, and the River Run Chiquita Classic will all continue into Sunday, and Studio-C Cinema will host another showing of “The Great Beauty” at 7pm to wind down your weekend.
