Our community calendar this week offers a great variety of events, from a folk performance to an opportunity to meet an author. If the outdoors is calling your name, perhaps you would like participate in a triathlon or a 6K? If you’re in the mood to explore your artsy side, two art crawls are on this week’s horizon. If you’re thinking, what will I do with my kids this first week of vacation? How about a campout? Maybe a summer reading festival? Or even a nature outing? This last full week of spring is loaded with options for all!
Monday join author Alex McKeithen as he discusses his memoir, “The Seventh Angel,” at Davidson public library. Alex is former Davidson College student and while attending ended up in a Parisian asylum. There will be a Q&A and book signing after the discussion.
Meetings this week include the Lake Norman Marine Commission on Monday, and the Davidson Town Board on Tuesday. Community in Christ Lutheran Church in Cornelius offers a job assistance workshop on Tuesday as well. On Wednesday, the Lake Norman Transportation Commission meets, and the Mecklenburg County Commission holds a public hearing on the county’s 2014-15 budget.
Wednesday also brings a 6pm public information session at Cornelius Town Hall about the Exit 28 interchange reconstruction, including detours during the shutdown of the Catawba Avenue overpass on June 20-22.
If you’re up for a ballgame Tuesday evening, don’t miss out on some Legion baseball, Mooresville Moors v. Stanly County at Lake Norman High School. Also Tuesday, ESPN sportswriter Rick Reilly will visit Davidson to help introduce a new coffee at Summit Coffee and to speak at an evening fundraiser for the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, which he helped found. Both events will help raise money to send mosquito nets to Africa.
On Wednesday morning, learn how to download e-books at Davidson Public Library. Make sure to take a lunch break Wednesday, when you can grab some deliciousness at “Lunch on the Lot” at the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius. You can find a different truck there every week.
On Friday, grab your kids and enjoy a beautiful morning from 10am to noon on the Davidson Village Green for the Davidson library’s Summer Reading Kickoff Festival. Enjoy the music of kids’ rock band, Lunch Money and fun activities for the whole family. Come dressed as your favorite storybook character.
Pack up your tents and sleeping bags Friday evening and head to First Baptist Church in Huntersville for a community camping experience. All families, Boy and Girl scouts, and others are invited. Food, games, and breakfast the next morning will be provided.
If you’re craving some local art, don’t miss the Second Friday Art Crawl in Downtown Cornelius at the Oak Street Mill. The evening offers a pedestrian friendly path of art, craft, culture, and community.
Enjoy the outdoors on Saturday and participate in Historic Latta Plantation’s Tri Latta Triathlon. Part of the AAA Car Care North Carolina Triathlon Series, this race features a 17 miles bike ride, a 750M swim, and a 5k run. The deadline is Wednesday, June 11, at 6:30am. Also Saturday, the US National Whitewater Center hosts its Brew Stash Bash craft beer and music fest, including the Brew Dash 6K.
Want to spend some time outdoors with your kids Saturday morning? Join The Lands Conservancy and Woodland Discovery as they host a free World of Wonder nature outing in the Davidson/North Mecklenburg area from 9:30-11am.
Enjoy a solo performance by Andy Irvine in the intimate setting of the Jim Rivers Fellowship Hall (100 seats).at 8PM. Purchase tickets online at www.folksociety.org or at the door. Guests are invited to bring their favorite beverage and snack to enjoy. No distilled spirits, please. Doors open at 7:30pm, event begins at 8PM.
Wrap up your Saturday by joining local artist at the Downtown Davidson Art Crawl from 6-9pm. The crawl will include more than 25 local artists on Main Street’s sidewalks. Vendors will be selling everything from fine art and textiles to bath products and baked goods. With live music by singer/songwriter Charlie King as well as musical performances at Summit Coffee, The Birdsnest and other venues. Also, Davidson Wine Shop will host a wine tasting inside Sanctuary.
