A few ideas for beating the heat

[1]Temperatures are rising, which may leave some of us looking for ways to cool off this summer. Short of dipping in a pool or jumping in the lake — and both of these are perfectly suitable options, in my opinion — there are other ways to beat the heat this weekend that may or may not be on our collective radar.
Allow me to put them there. Here are several suggestions aimed at keeping our brains from sizzling like scrambled eggs on hot pavement:
- Birkdale Village [2] — one quick pass around the Fountain at Birkdale Village confirms my assessment that this is the ultimate spot for any child under 3 feet tall to be; the place to chill out with friends, make new friends, play with water, and, just have fun all under the watchful eye of parents. And, parents, feel free to splash it up with the kids.

- Lake Norman State Park — Did you know we have a public beach nearby? A few miles north of us is a sandy beach just waiting for you to stake out your spot, spread out a towel, and get out the sunscreen. Sure, you have to drive to Troutman, but, let’s face it, it’s not that far away. And, well worth the drive to enjoy the sand, sun, and swimming it offers.
- Boomerang Bay Waterpark at Carowinds [4]— Who am I kidding? I’m sure this is on your radar. Everyone knows the awesomeness that is Carowinds and its waterpark. But, that’s ok. It’s worth suggesting just in case you thought the drive to Carowinds Boulevard was too far away. It’s not.
[5]Blowing Rock [6]— One sure fire way to turn down nature’s thermostat is to head up the mountain. This quaint town is a little over an hour’s drive from us and an absolute gem in the High Country. On any given summer day expect it to be at least ten degrees cooler there with temps even chillier at night. Shopping, sightseeing, attractions such as Tweetsie Railroad [7] and Grandfather Mountain [8], there’s something for everyone in this “cool” little town.
Brace yourselves, folks. No sense in getting overheated now. Summer’s just beginning. Have a great weekend, everyone.
