A program Thursday in Mooresville examines the growing presence of coyotes in urban areas.
This week, enjoy a reading by Tony Abbott from his new book, “The Angel Dialogues,” or listen to a talk by artist Yvonne Petkus, whose exhibition “Searching” opens at Davidson College Thursday. Religion professor Richard Miller is in town this week to give two lectures on empathy and religion, and the Davidson Town Board and Lake Norman Marine Commission both meet this week. On Thursday, there’s a program about urban coyotes at Mooresville Public Library. Read on for more highlights and events from This Week’s calendar.
COMING UP THIS WEEK
This week brings a variety of civic meetings. The Lake Norman Marine Commission [2] meets Monday at 7pm, at the Charles Mack Citizens Center in Mooresville. The Davidson Town Board [3] meets on Tuesday, with a pre-meeting at 4pm and regular meeting at 6pm at Davidson Town Hall.
Also Monday, Summit Coffee continues its weekly trivia night [4] starting at 7:30pm upstairs on Main Street in Davidson. Be sure to arrive early to check in, get a table, and grab a drink.
On Tuesday, the Organ at Davidson Series [5] continues. Organist Jane D. Cain and singers Margaret Carpenter, Chris Gilliam, and Jimmy Jones will perform Bach’s “Coffee Cantata” at 7:30pm at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

This Wednesday, make plans to grab lunch at the weekly Lunch in the Lot [6] food truck feature at the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius from 11am-2pm. The Cornelius Cultural Arts Group invites local food trucks over once a week to serve creative and fresh meals. Wednesday afternoon, Davidson College Professor Emeritus of English Tony Abbott will read from his new book, “The Angel Dialogues [7]“ at 4:30pm in the Carolina Inn.
Davidson College invites the public to attend a talk by artist Yvonne Petkus [8] who will discuss the work in her exhibition “Searching,” which opens Thursday [9] at the Belk Visual Arts Center. Richard B. Miller, Provost Professor in Religious Studies at Indiana University, will give a talk titled “Feeling With, and For, Others: Ethical Investigations” [10] at 7:30pm in the 900 Room of the Alvarez College Union. Mr. Miller will give another lecture on Thursday evening at the same time and location, titled “The Ethics of Empathy: Feeling, Imagination and Judgment.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, on Thursday Davidson College invites the public to an art opening reception [9] for Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Darren Douglas Floyd’s exhibition “Destroyer of Dreams, Or, Container of All Future Meaning” and for painter Yvonne Petkus’ exhibition titled “Searching.” The reception will be held at 6pm in the Belk Visual Arts Center.
And Naturalist Chris Matthews will discuss “Coyotes: Wily or Wary?” [11]at the next free nature program sponsored by Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists Thursday at Mooresville library. It’s discussion of the problem of urban coyotes.
On Friday, the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center will host a parade in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday [12], led by Grand Marshalls Mayor John Woods and Mayor Chuck Travis. This Friday, the Cornelius Second Friday Art Crawl [13] is back starting at 5pm in downtown Cornelius, and the Davidson College Environmental Action Coalition invites the public to its annual “Green Ball” contra dance [14] at 7:30pm.
