Several theatre productions open this weekend, including a student performance of “Les Miserables” and Davidson Community Players’ “Flyin’ West,” a play about African-American women pioneers in the American West. A plethora of musical offerings are on the calendar as well, including a performance by organist Tim Belk at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, and a recital by Davidson College professor and trumpeter Bill Lawing. Thursday, Davidson College’s Connor House hosts its biannual Drink Pink fundraiser all day at Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse – 15 percent of proceeds from anything on the menu will go towards Bosom Buddies, the organization’s breast cancer support initiative. Several theatre performances are on the calendar for Thursday evening.
Thirty-seven students representing 12 area schools will be performing in “Les Miserables, Student Edition” opening Thursday at 7pm at the Community School of Davidson’s ArtSpace. The show will run through Sunday at 2pm. The Davidson Theatre Department’s presentation of “Mr. Marmalade” will continue Thursday evening at 7:30pm and will run through Sunday afternoon. The Davidson Community Players will present “Flyin’ West”, a play about three stron and independent African-American women pioneers in the American West, starting at 8pm in the Armour Street Theatre. Bella Love presents Open Mic Night at Kadi Fit starting at 8pm, featuring area performers and artists at Kadi Fit Studios in Downtown Cornelius.

Friday morning begins with the next of the Focus Friday series, with a discussion on hospital competition and expansion at 8:30am at the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce with several industry experts and representatives. Davidson College invites the public to attend a lecture from Rebecca Alexander during a Chemistry Colloquium at 2:30pm in the Martin Chemistry Building. The annual Women’s Leadership Conference at Davidson College will be held this weekend, starting at 6pm Friday evening and lasting through Saturday. Space is limited, be sure to register at womensleadershipdavidson.com. Friday evening the Cornelius Concert Series presents a performance by Timothy J. Belk, a celebrated organist, at Mt. Zion UMC at 7pm.
Start Saturday off at the Davidson Farmers Market next to Town Hall, open from 9am – noon, with local farmers and producers selling a bounty of winter produce and goods. The Cannon School will host an Open House at 1pm on their campus for prospective students and their parents, grades junior-kindergarten through 12. The Davidson College Women’s Basketball team takes on Western Carolina at home at 4pm, followed by the Men’s Basketball team challenging Wofford at home at 7pm. The men’s game will be broadcast on ESPN3 (ESPN’s online subscription streaming service).
Sunday afternoon, Trumpter Bill Lawing, the Milner Professor of Music and trumpet instructor at Davidson College, will give at 3pm at Tyler-Tallman Hall. The Charlotte Jewish Film Festival, in partnership with Temple Kol Tikvah, presents a screening of “A Bottle in the Gaza Sea” at 3pm in the Davidson College Alvarez Student Union.
