This Weekend’s calendar brings dozens of events across the region, including a visit to Main Street Books in Davidson by NC Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti on Sunday, a WFAE Public Conversation Thursday night on Home Owners Associations, an art opening at Cornelius’s Brick Row Gallery, and a several spiritual lectures and discussions on Sunday. And don’t forget about Saturday night’s Eden Street Market gallery crawl in Davidson. Read on for more highlights and events from This Weekend’s calendar.
COMING UP THIS WEEK
WFAE’s Public Conversations: Home Owners Associations (HOAs) will be held at 7pm at Davidson Day School to discuss HOAs, their pros and cons, and perspectives from panelists. If you didn’t catch it, check out a primer on the subject from our legal columnists David & Lyn Batty, “I want a red door, but my HOA says paint it black.”
Later Thursday evening, the Warehouse Annual 10-minute Comedy Playfest continues at 8pm. This year’s theme: a 10-minute or less comedy with 5 or less actors in “Eunice’s Beauty, Barber & Bait Shoppe.” Shows continue all weekend. Bella Love presents Open Mic Night at Kadi Fit starting at 9pm and lasting into the morning. $5 cover charge, 21+ drink specials, and guaranteed entertainment by numerous local performers.

On Friday, Davidson College invites the public to join students at the fifth annual Dinner at Davidson at 5:30pm. The event will celebrate the college’s commitment to affordability and The Davidson Trust. Brick Row Gallery will host an art opening and reception for “Convergence,” a show featuring work by local artists Nathaniel Lancaster, Melissa D. Johnston, Scott Partridge, and Brian Rumping. Reception is free and open to the public. The 10th year of Big Day at the Lake, an event to connect at-risk children from Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) with Lake Norman volunteers for a day of fun on the lake, begins at 6pm at Harvey’s Bar and Grill in Cornelius. All proceeds from the event will be donated to BBBS.
Saturday starts early with the Davidson Farmer’s Market winter market, opening at 9am to noon next to Davidson Town Hall. The Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg invites the public to their annual Pancake Breakfast and Talent Show from 8am – 11:30am at Bethel Presbyterian. The Eden Street Market Gallery Crawl will return to Downtown Davidson at 5pm on Eden Street. The Davidson Film Club presents a screening of “The Violin,” a Mexican film, at 7pm in the Armour Street Theatre. Davidson College invites the public Saturday evening to the Apocalypse Step Show, a step dance performance by teams from the various Divine Nine National Panhellinic Council organizations.
Sunday brings several faith based and spiritual classes and discussions, starting with “God’s Invasion Underway: Conversations of Things Coming to Pass and Things Passing Away,” a discussion on apocalyptic theology at 9:45am. DavidsonLearns continues its discussion on “The Case of Israel and Palestine” at 3:30pm at Temple Kol Tikva. Davidson College Presbyterian Church will host a discussion titled “Do Muslims and Christians worship the same God?” at 4:00pm in the Parlor at DCPC.
POET LAUREATE AT MAIN STREET BOOKS
Also on Sunday, The North Carolina Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti will be visiting Main Street Books at 2pm to read from his new book of poems, Concertina. St. Alban’s will be celebrating the music of CPE Bach and his 300th birthday at 3pm in St. Alban’s Church.
