The Warehouse PAC’s comedy play fest opens Thursday in Cornelius.
Davidson College’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day events this week include a keynote speech at noon Tuesday by the former head of the NAACP, Benjamin Jealous. DavidsonLearns kicks off its winter term with two weekly classes. Also this week, several lectures and forums at the college concerning historical and current events are on the calendar. And the Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius kciks off its annual 10-minute comedy play fest. Read on for more highlights and events from This Week’s calendar.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY AT DAVIDSON COLLEGE
Davidson College planned a series of events on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 20-21, to mark Martin Luther King Day 2014. Tuesday’s keynote speech at noon will feature NAACP past president Benjamin Jealous, in Duke Family Performance Hall. For the complete schedule, visit our Events Calendar [2].
COMING UP THIS WEEK
On Tuesday, The Probus Club of Lake Norman [3] will feature a talk by Bob Mullen, noted Victory-disc collector, at 10am at Berea Baptist Church. The Canon School will host an informational event [4] at 10am at the school’s campus in Concord. The 2014 DavidsonLearns program has already begun, and will feature an Intro to Poetry Class [5] on Tuesdays from 10am – 12:30pm at Temple Kol Tikva. As the second part of the Public Dissonance Lecture Series [6], Mitchell B. Morris of Amherst College will speak on New York Times music critic, novelist, and photographer Carl Van Vechten at 11:05 am in Davidson College’s Sloan Music Center.
Tuesday evening, the Mooresville Town Board [7] will meet at 6pm at Mooresville Town Hall, while the Cornelius Town Board [8] meets at 7pm in Town Hall. Davidson College invites the public to attend a piano concert titled “The Russians Are Coming!” [9] Artist Associate in Piano Cynthia Lawing will perform works by Russian composers. There is no charge to attend the concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Tyler-Tallman Hall of Sloan Music Center.
Wednesday, Lunch in the Lot [10] returns and features another food truck at Oak Street Mill from 11am – 2pm. The Davidson Community Players’ the Connie Company is seeking energetic and imaginative youth ages 8-18 for its Spring Ensemble Workshops. Auditions will be held January 22nd and 23rd [11] from 5:30-7:00pm at Armour Street Theatre. DavidsonLearns offers another class, titled “The Romance of Traditional and Independent Publishing,” [12] that is geared towards aspiring fiction writers interested in the romance novel genre. The class will meet Wednesdays from 6:30pm – 8pm. Wednesday evening, guitarist Jeff Brown will perform at Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse [13] from 7:30pm – 9:30pm.
Looking ahead to Thursday, Main St. Books will host Story Time at Main St. Books [14] from 10am-11am for children ages 1-5. With the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi upon us, the Vann Center for Ethics at Davidson College will present a forum Jan. 23 on “Sochi 2014: Gender, Ethics, Sport.” [15] The event is at 4:30pm in the Alvarez College Union on the Davidson Campus. Davidson College also invites the public to an opening and reception for the art exhibition “State of Emergency” [16] Thursday evening at 6pm.
This weekend also kicks off the Warehouse Performing Arts Center’s annual 10-minute Comedy Playfest [17]. Shows run Thursday through Feb. 9. Showtimes are 8pm Thursdays through Saturdays, and Sundays at 2pm.
