Art opening, theatre, film screening & MLK events

This weekend, enjoy the opening of “State of Emergency” [1] at Davidson College’s Van Every Gallery in the Belk Visual Arts Center. The Davidson Community Players will be presenting a one-weekend only performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the Davidson Film Club will present a screening of “The Lives of Others.” Read on for more highlights and events from This Weekend’s calendar.
COMING UP THIS WEEK
Thursday, the Davidson Green School will host an information session [2] at 5pm at the school’s campus. Davidson Men’s Basketball hosts Elon at 7pm at Belk Arena for the annual Black Out Belk game [3]. Bella Love’s open mic night [4] continues this week at Kadi Fit at 8pm until midnight. $5 cover.
On Friday, The Davidson Community Players will be offering a free showing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory [5] on 7pm and two additional shows on Saturday at 1pm and 4pm. Join the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce for Focus Friday [6] at 8:30am at the Lake Norman Chamber. This Friday’s topic is “Meet the New Town Commissioners.” The Mooresville Artist Guild will be hosting its first juried exhibit and competition, “The Winter Juried Art Exhibition.” [7] The opening reception will be January 17 from 6-8pm. The exhibit will run from January 14 – February 27.
This Saturday, the 16th Annual RRRC Polar Bear 50k and 100k cycling rides [8] will be held at 10am in Davidson. Registration opens at 8:30am, and the ride starts at 10am. The Cornelius mayor, Board of Commissioners, PARC Commission members and staff will conduct a bond planning special meeting [9] on at the Peninsula Club at 9am. The MLK Call to Service with Hands on Charlotte [10] will take place across the Charlotte region from 10am to noon. More information available at www.handsoncharlotte.org/mlk2014 [11]. At 7pm, the Davidson Film Club will present a screening of the German film “The Lives of Others” [12] at the Armour Street Theatre.
Sunday, Rev. Rob Spach will continue leading a four-week program on the Christian Monastic Tradition [13] at 9:45am in Room B of the DCPC Congregation House.
MLK DAY EVENTS
The Town of Cornelius and Town of Davidson offices will be closed Monday, as will most federal offices in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Davidson College is hosting numerous Martin Luther King, Jr. Day events to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday on Monday and Tuesday, culminating in a talk delivered by former NAACP resident and CEO Benjamin T. Jealous on Tuesday at 11am. The commemorative program begins Monday at 9am in the Alvarez Student Union with King Day for Kids and a Civil Rights Cinema.
