We’ve stuffed ourselves with turkey and are now in the heart of the holiday season. Feeling a bit bah-humbug-ish? I’ve got just the cure with several weekend events sure to lift even the most Grinch of spirits.
Wasting no time we start tonight (Thursday) at Christmas in Davidson. Plenty of seasonal fun on tap for this annual three day celebration that wraps Saturday. Streets will close each night from 6pm to 9pm, Thursday, Dec. 5, to Saturday, Dec. 7, as visitors shop local vendors, enjoy musical performances, view a live nativity, and meet up with Santa.
The highlight of the weekend begins Saturday at 1pm, with the North Mecklenburg Christmas Parade, brought to us jointly by the Cornelius-Lemley Volunteer Fire Department and the Davidson Fire Department. In its 31st year, the parade winds its way down North Main Street in Davidson to Hickory Street in Cornelius, ending at Mt Zion United Methodist Church. For more information, check out our coverage in Guide and traffic alerts for Christmas in Davidson.
Not to be outdone by its neighbor to the north, Cornelius plays host to Santa Friday morning at the town’s annual Cocoa with Santa event. From 9:30am to 11:30am on Friday December 6th kids will have his undivided attention at the Cornelius Arts Center. Give your little ones the chance to make sure he knows exactly what’s on their list. While there enjoy cocoa and refreshments as children engage in creative, art-filled holiday themed activities and projects, and pose for pictures with the jolly man in red. Located behind the police department in the historic Oak Street Mill building at 19725 Oak St, this event is open to all (no registration necessary.)
Don’t let your holiday cup runneth over before listening to the sounds of the season at Davidson College. The public is invited to hear Christmas Vespers Sunday evening, December 8th, beginning at 7:15pm at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. End your weekend with joyful noise. This annual ceremony of holiday lessons and carols includes not to miss performances by the Davidson College Chorale, and the school’s String and Brass Ensembles.
There you have it, plenty of holiday fun to put you in the right frame of mind. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a tree to put up, gifts to wrap, a house to decorate, and cards to address. But I’m no Grinch, I love it.
Enjoy your weekend, everyone!
