Landscape photographs by Ben Yarborough of Davidson are featured in November at Davidson Town Hall. Yarborough’s subjects range from mountain vistas to seaside scenes and this show also includes a series of nighttime photographs in Davidson.
Yarborough, 64, is a Davidson dentist and has lived in town since 1978. He’s also known for his longtime work as a leader in Davidson Boy Scout Troop 58.
He has been interested in cameras off and on since high school in New Jersey.
“I had a Polaroid camera and just started making images,” he said. His interest “waxed and waned” over the years, and it wasn’t until 1978, while on a trip to St. Thomas with wife Kaye, that he got his first 35mm camera.
In recent years he has spent a lot of his free time photographing in the North Carolina and West Virginia mountains and at the Carolinas coast.
“I’m still trying to find my voice, but I think mine is landscape,” Yarborough said. “Light and landscape are what I like.”
Some of the photos in this show are a nighttime scenes, including shots of Avinger Lane, the Davidson Village Inn on Depot Street with its bright green sign, and one of the Garden City pier at the South Carolina Coast. In the latter, he captured neon and other lights against a dark blue sky just after dusk, “in the magic hour,” he said.
The exhibit at Davidson Town Hall is Yarborough’s first solo show. It’s on display in the atrium gallery is open weekdays during business hours, 8am to 5pm, and evenings and weekends during town events. Town Hall is at 216 S. Main St., Davidson. The show will be on display through Nov. 30.
