This week in the regional music scene, two Davidson music venues are hosting singer/songwriters and an up-and-coming band, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte will host its 13th Annual Cabaret Night. These events are part of a larger movement of independent artists performing at intimate, local venues such as Carrburritos and The Birdsnest.

You Me & Apollo performs this Thursday at Carrburritos

Thursday at Carrburritos, Fort Collins/Denver based band You Me & Apollo takes the stage at 9:30pm to entertain guests with their blend of “the fury of rock’n’roll and the heartfelt spirit of blues into a folk/Americana sound that really comes alive [during their] performances,” according to Peter Washington of Concerted Effort Blog.

The St. Peter’s Choir will perform in the 13th Annual Cabaret Night at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte

13TH ANNUAL CABARET NIGHT CONCERT

The Choir School at St. Peter’s will present its 13th annual Cabaret Night Concert on Friday, Oct. 11. Proceeds will benefit the music and youth development programs of the choral school in Charlotte. The concert begins at 7:30pm in the sanctuary of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, in uptown Charlotte. The choirs will sing musical selections from around the world, including a Welsh Folk song, a Gaelic melody and a traditional American Spiritual. Special guests will include Celtic duo The Thistledown Tinkers and The Charlotte Scottish Country Dance Society.

Canadian singer/songwriter Ria Mae will perform at The Birdsnest this Saturday

THE BIRDSNEST HOSTS RIA MAE, CHRIS VELAN

On Saturday, The Birdsnest in downtown Davidson will host an evening with Canadian singer/songwriters Ria Mae and Chris Velan this starting at 8pm.

Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ria Mae is a versatile artist who creates songs with universal themes of longing, love lost, and hearts found. She has had an outstanding year with the release of her debut full-length album, “Under Your Skin,” produced by Asif Illyas. “Under Your Skin” won the 2012 East Coast Music Award for Pop Recording of the Year, Ria was a finalist for the 2011 International Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, and was the Regional Winner and National Runner-up for the 2012 Canada-wide Radio Star Contest.

The Birdsnest will be featuring singer/songwriter Chris Velan this Saturday

Chris Velan is a Montreal based singer-songwriter and world music producer. For his fifth full-length outing, The Long Goodbye, he has returned with a collection of songs that chart the emotional depths and shallows navigated in the aftermath of a relationship’s end. Where Velan’s last two albums Solidago (2009) and Fables For Fighters (2011) grapple on different levels with themes of finding one’s place in the world, The Long Goodbye takes a different turn. The past albums featured the buoyant sensibilities of pop, African and reggae-influenced arrangements; here he surrenders fully to the beat of heartbreak.
