Lectures, meetings, and academic discussions are on the calendar this week in the Lake Norman region, starting today with the Huntersville Rotary Club meeting [2] at Dressler’s in Birkdale Village at 5:30pm. Davidson College invites the public to a panel discussion titled “Gun Rights, Responsibilities, and Regulations” [3] at 6:30pm in the Lilly Gallery of the Chambers Building, and Summit Coffee’s Trivia Night [4] starts a new month of trivial competition at 7:30pm. COMING UP THIS WEEK
The Davidson Town Board [5] will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening at 6pm at the Davidson Town Hall. ACAL of Mexico will host “The Third Root: From Africa to Latin America,” [7] an art exhibit and cultural program, at Johnson C. Smith University starting at 6pm in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Tuesday night Virginia Vance, former professor of music at Peace University and organist at First Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mount, will play the second concert of the 2013-2014 Organ at Davidson series [8] starting at 7:30pm with a reception to follow. Events in the series are free, and donations are encouraged.
Wednesday is International Walk to School Day, and the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with Davidson Elementary and the Community School of Davidson to honor the day. Read the event listing on the Events Calendar [9] for more details; students who regularly walk or bike are encouraged to take their normal route to school as a part of the event. Davidson Professor and Chair of Mathematics Laurie Heyer will deliver a lecture titled “Living Computers” [10] on Wednesday at 1pm in the Davidson Town Hall boardroom as a part of the Davidson Senior Scholars Lecture series. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Wednesday evening, the Lake Norman Regional Transportation Commission (LNTC) will hold its monthly transportation commission meeting [11]on Wednesday at 6:30pm at Cornelius Town Hall; meetings are open to the public. The River Run Property Owners Association’s Government Affairs Committee will host a community-wide candidate forum [12] for the Davidson Town Board elections starting at 7pm at the River Run Country Club ballroom, and is open to all Davidson residents interested in the upcoming election. Poet Al Young, a former visiting McGhee Professor of Writing at Davidson College, will return to campus Wednesday evening at 7:30pm for a program titled “Does Love Work? Ask a Poet” [13],in the 900 Room of the Student Union.
