The last week of summer features high school sports, lectures, and numerous special interest meetings across the region. Tonight, join the newly formed Huntersville “Happy Hour” Rotary Club at Dressler’s in Birkdale Village from 5:30-6:30pm – they meet every Monday to discuss service and leadership in the community. Hough High’s men’s soccer team takes on Mallard Creek at home starting at 6pm, and The Lake Norman Big Band plays at the Finish Line Restaurant starting at 7pm. Tonight ReadDavidson, the town wide reading initiative, continues with a book discussion led by Davidson Professor Ann Wills on “A Land More Kind Than Home” by Wiley Cash. Davidson College invites the community to hear Davidson alumna Zama Coursen-Neff, Executive Director of the Children’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch, present a talk beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvarez College Union Smith 900 Room titled “Promoting the Rights of Children in the Midst of Armed Conflict.” In conflicts worldwide, students, teachers and schools are not just caught in the crossfire; they are also intentionally targeted as a tactic of war.

On Tuesday, Bailey Middle School will be offering QPR suicide prevention training to parents in the school media center on Bailey Road starting at 6:30pm. QPR (Question Persuade Refer) is a nationally recognized suicide prevention model. Participants will learn to recognize the warning signs of suicide; learn how to offer help; and know how to get help to save a life.
Wednesday, the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce will honor local businesses at its third annual Champions of Diversity Breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30am at the Port City Club. Ronnie Bryant, President & CEO of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, will be the keynote speaker. DCPC and DUMC continue offering The Davidson Career Transition Program on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. They meet at 10am this week at Davidson United Methodist.
Thursday morning, the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club will hold its weekly meeting at 7:30am at the Acropolis restaurant in Cornelius.
