The arts scene north of Charlotte is booming these days. I envision a time – soon – when residents of Cornelius and Davidson won’t have to venture into the city at all unless we just want to see tall buildings, or encounter traffic.
Among those impacting the arts scene locally, and in a big way, is The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. The intriguing, cool, black box venue on Westmoreland Road churns out production after production of quality live theater. Don’t believe me? Check out their latest offering, “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife,” which ends its well received run this weekend.

Cat Rutledge stars as Marjorie Taub, a suffering Upper West Side Manhattanite with perhaps too much free time on her hands to concern herself with life’s real problems. Instead, she wallows in a state of self imposed pity brought on by the arrival of an empty mid life, its subsequent lack of meaning therein, and the death of a beloved therapist. Cue the tears and laughter for the privileged character who deserves little sympathy but is charismatic, melodramatic, and funny enough to make us care. Cue also the arrival of a long lost friend who threatens to rip at the very fabric of her manufactured depression. Phil Roberts plays the allergist, Dr. Taub, while Warehouse director Marla Brown plays the long lost friend. The show is directed by Charlotte theater vet Jim Esposito.
The funny and satirical play written by Charles Busch, which made the rounds of New York and Los Angeles, can now add Cornelius to its esteemed list of destinations. Four shows remain before the theater takes a break in its 2013-14 season, returning in October with “The Amish Project.”
Those shows are happening tonight, Friday, and Saturday at 8pm, with a 2pm matinee on Sunday.
Tickets are $20. Seating is limited. Visit www.warehousepac.com for more information.
The stage is set for a great weekend, everyone.
Don’t miss it!
