There was a time in my life before sushi. I remember it well. It was lackluster, really. I will never forget the first time I tried it. Instantly, I was in love. Now, I never miss an opportunity to enjoy it. For me, it’s something I can consume without guilt. Which, is rare because I can think about food and feel the pounds hunting me down.
Not sushi. I could literally eat my weight in it and not feel a thing. My only gripe is the price. Rarely does my tab for two come in at under a hundred dollars. Of course, wine doesn’t help. But, who am I to venture off topic? Back to sushi. What better way to enjoy it in this economy than by learning how to make it yourself?
That’s where my weekend pick comes into play. Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse hosts a beginner’s class in making sushi. For $29.95 a person, you can learn how to roll it yourself and start saving some big bucks. Not to mention impressing your friends with a new found talent.
A dear friend of mine recently opened a “participatory” dining space where the experience of making food is as important as eating it. Consider this your opportunity to experience food in a new way. You’ll learn how to roll your own sushi with bamboo, and produce other creations like sashimi, maki, and nigiri.
All you need is a willingness to play with fish (and a knife and 8×11 cutting board, everything else is provided.) Call ahead to reserve your spot 704- 655-0077. And for the love of sushi, don’t miss out!
