This Memorial Day weekend be sure to check out the variety of regularly scheduled events in the Davidson and Cornelius area, such as live music and wine tastings, before honoring our service members at one of the area Memorial Day ceremonies, including a visit by Governor Pat McCrory.
Thursday night, stop by The Wine Cellar for live music and a wine tasting or head over to Summit Coffee, where The Vel-Crows are up Thursday. On Saturday, Summit hosts the Rick Spreitzer Band. Campania continues its Friday night Party on the Porch, and the The Galway Hooker Pub & Restaurant will feature My Three Kilts this Friday evening and more music Saturday night. Every Saturday morning, The Davidson Farmer’s Market continues to offer fresh, local food and crafts next to Town Hall. There will be several area Memorial Day ceremonies and celebrations in our area – read on for the details.
MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONIES & CELEBRATIONS
Memorial Day activities begin this weekend at the US National Whitewater Center (USNWC) Memorial Day Celebration on Sunday with 5- and 8-mile road races on the USNWC trail system. After the races the celebration will kick in to high gear, with live music and a fireworks show at the complex. The festival will feature a mix of funk, soul and rock with live performances by Jesse Dee, Bonerama and headliner Marc Broussard. A fireworks display will be held at sunset. Other than the races, which require registration, the festival is free and open to the public.
Cornelius will have a Memorial Day Ceremony commemorating the sacrifices of our armed services at the Veterans Monument at Rotary Plaza, hosted by American Legion Post 86. The public is invited to attend and honor the fallen.
Governor Pat McCrory and Representative Richard Hudson (NC-8) will participate in the dedication and reopening ceremonies for the Kannapolis Veterans Park. Gov. McCrory will deliver opening remarks at the conclusion of the Parade of Veterans, and Rep. Hudson will present a flag flown over the US Capitol. At 2pm, there will be a free screening of the film “Pearl Harbor” at The Gem Theatre.
As a reminder, area schools, government buildings, and most businesses will close in observance of Memorial Day.
