Scout

Two weeks have passed since we brought home our new addition and he is growing by leaps and bounds. Part Shar Pei, part Lab, according to paperwork from the Cornelius Animal Shelter, Scout has wasted no time fitting right into our family. Truthfully, he’s more part “Anybody’s Guess” based on the number of suggestions we’ve received of various breeds from friends and acquaintances, who never miss an opportunity to ask “What is he?”

I find that question odd. My dog is more than a dog to me. I don’t go up to my friends with children, point to their kids, and ask “What are they?” They’re people. I can make that assessment on my own. Not to be overly sensitive, which I realize I am. It just seems intrusive. I’m always quick to say he’s a pound puppy. Who cares what a piece of paper says? As long as you love them and there’s room in your heart, that’s all that matters.

That’s not to say I appreciate all the chewing a certain pound puppy named Scout has been doing around here. However, with proper training and patience, he’ll grow out of it and be the best Pound Puppy he can be.

So, I may have lost a few articles of clothing, and a pair of shoes (or two), at this point, not to mention the straight ladder back kitchen chairs we’ve had for too long, and, frankly, want to replace, he’s worth it. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ready for a calmer dog with duller teeth who didn’t express himself with “love bites,” if you will.

With this in mind, look for us at the Charlotte Pet Expo this weekend! We’ll be hitting up dog trainers for tips, checking out vendors, and seeing what’s new and fabulous in the world of canines. If you’re an animal lover like me, you’ll want to attend.

The 2013 Charlotte Pet Expo is happening all day, Saturday, May 18, from 10AM to 6PM, at the Park Expo & Convention Center, 800 Briar Creek Rd (off Independence Boulevard.) In addition to having pets like Scout available for adoption, they’ll provide low cost vaccinations, micro-chipping, among other things. A fun-filled, family friendly, pet-centered day of entertainment. Best of all, it’s free. Plus, you might see Scout. Don’t be upset if he rips a hole in your pants. He means well.
