A busy week lies ahead in the Lake Norman area with films, public meetings and fundraisers, including Free Cone Day Tuesday at Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops. Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. youth theater opens its production of “Treasure Island” and there’s plenty of live music at area venues. The April Is for Arts Festival in Davidson kicks off with a Downtown Davidson gallery crawl Friday night. Meanwhile, the sports schedule includes games for the Hough High girls soccer team and Davidson College teams, as well as the home opener for the Kannapolis Intimidators minor league baseball team, who face the Hickory Crawdads Thursday. Saturday is chock full of community festivals, including the Lake Norman YMCA’s Family Fun Day, Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Community Fest, the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Paddlefest on Lake Davidson, and the Pawz Too Run 5K on the Davidson Village Green. MONDAY, APRIL 8
Davidson walking-biking workshop, 6-8pm, Davidson Town Hall board room, 216 S. Main St. – A public workshop is planned on the proposed pedestrian master plan. It’s a drop-in session with no formal presentation. Citizens are invited to their concerns about walking and biking in Davidson with consultants and committee members. Teens Helping Teens, 7-8pm, Davidson United Methodist Church, The Counseling Center, 261 S. Main St., Davidson – Shannon White, LPC and Christine Wisdom, MS, LPCA of The Counseling Center at Davidson United Methodist Church (DUMC) will provide a non-judgmental and confidential environment for teens ages 13-18 to discuss various topics, including: grief and loss, self-esteem, family dynamics, coping skills, peer pressure, substance use, social skills, and career/college preparation. Emergency siren tests at McGuire, Mountain Island, 11:50am, area around McGuire Nuclear Station on Lake Norman – Quarterly test of emergency sirens around Duke Energy’s nuclear plant in Huntersville. No public action is required during this three-minute test. In case of an emergency, the siren is a signal for residents to tune to a radio or TV station for emergency alerts. I-77 HOT lanes public input meeting, 5-7pm, CPCC-Merancas Campus, Belk Center Auditorium, 11920 Verhoeff Dr., Huntersville – Mecklenburg Union Metropolitan Planning Organization (MUMPO) will host a meeting to collect public input on a proposal to amend the region’s long-range transportation plan to widen I-77 using high-occupancy toll lanes.
